Toy Factory Productions is bringing back its acclaimed original musical Moonlit City this August with a refreshed English staging that revisits the enduring love story between Singapore’s founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew and his wife Kwa Geok Choo. Presented together with Exclusive Presenting Partner PropNex, the production returns after a successful 2025 debut that attracted more than 7,000 theatregoers and earned praise for its emotional portrayal of love, sacrifice and nation building.
Set to run at Victoria Theatre from 14 to 30 August 2026, the revitalised production features a larger cast, enhanced set design, new costumes and a newly created song by music director Benny Wong. Arriving shortly after Singapore’s National Day celebrations, the musical invites audiences to reflect on the deeply personal relationships and shared ideals that helped shape the nation’s formative years.
Rather than focusing solely on politics, Moonlit City centres on the partnership between Lee Kuan Yew and Kwa Geok Choo, offering an intimate look at the loyalty, resilience and devotion that sustained them through Singapore’s early challenges. The production explores the emotional and personal side of history, highlighting the importance of family and partnership during the country’s journey towards independence and growth.
The 2026 edition has been reimagined specifically for contemporary audiences. Instead of a direct translation, the updated English version incorporates refined storytelling, refreshed visuals and new music arrangements while preserving the spirit of the original work. The musical continues to draw inspiration from compositions by renowned Singaporean composer Tan Kah Beng, whose iconic Mandarin pop songs form the emotional core of the production.
Acclaimed Singaporean baritone and opera singer Alvin Julian Tan takes on the role of Lee Kuan Yew, while Sunny Yang reprises her role as Kwa Geok Choo following her praised performance in the 2025 debut. Supporting them is an ensemble cast featuring returning performers Mabel Yeo, Misha Paule Tan, Katherine Tang and Joel Low, who will portray former Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. New cast members include Danica Elisha Chan, Angel Mermairina, Wan Ahmad, Jayden Lim Jun De and Keith Lee. Indonesian musical theatre actor Robertus Darren Radyan also joins the production, adding an international dimension to the ensemble.
One of the musical’s highlights remains its use of Tan Kah Beng’s beloved songs, reinterpreted in English for the stage by lyricists Jedidiah and Elaine Chan. The production features eight well known songs including Moonlight in the City, The Sun After the Rain, Regret, Spreading, Aroma, Midnight Arrival, In the Midst of Chaos and Take Me Away. Moonlit City also holds the distinction of being the first theatre production inspired by Tan Kah Beng’s iconic song Moonlight in the City.
The musical is presented by PropNex, Singapore’s largest real estate agency, as part of its support for local arts and stories celebrating Singapore’s heritage and identity. The official launch of the production took place on 14 May 2026 at Pan Pacific Singapore, the musical’s Official Hotel Partner, in conjunction with the hotel’s 40th anniversary celebrations.
Moonlit City will run from 14 to 30 August 2026 at Victoria Theatre. Performances are scheduled at 3pm from Wednesday to Sunday and at 8pm from Thursday to Saturday. The musical runs for approximately 135 minutes, including a 15-minute intermission. Tickets are priced at S$108, S$98, S$78 and S$58, excluding booking fees, and are available via SISTIC.
