The Inter-Religious Organisation, Singapore (IRO) marked a new milestone in its community outreach efforts with the launch of its inaugural IRO Day Harmony Carnival, held on 11 and 12 April at Our Tampines Hub.
As the organisation’s first large-scale interfaith event in a heartland setting, the carnival aims to deepen grassroots engagement while raising awareness and understanding of Singapore’s 10 diverse faiths. Traditionally focused on leadership-level initiatives, such as joint prayers and national celebrations, the IRO is now extending its efforts directly into the community to foster everyday appreciation of religious harmony.
The event was officially opened by Dinesh Vasu Dash, Minister of State for the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth and Ministry of Manpower, as well as Mayor of the South East District. The carnival carries the theme, “Harmony is Intentional, Sustained, and Lived Daily,” reflecting its emphasis on active participation in building social cohesion.
IRO President K Elango подчеркнул that the organisation’s commitment to religious harmony must go beyond symbolic gestures. Instead, it should be actively experienced and practiced within everyday community life.
A key focus of the carnival is engaging younger Singaporeans, particularly as a growing number identify as having no religious affiliation. In this context, the IRO highlights that interfaith harmony is not solely about religious practice, but also about cultivating shared values such as respect, understanding, and coexistence.
Designed as an immersive and educational experience, the two-day carnival features five themed zones that guide visitors through Singapore’s multi-faith landscape. Through a mix of visual installations, workshops, and facilitated conversations, participants are encouraged to move from awareness to deeper understanding and personal reflection.
Visitors can explore walk-through exhibits showcasing the country’s diverse religious traditions, engage in interactive stations that challenge assumptions, and participate in quizzes and digital activities highlighting places of worship across Singapore.
The experience culminates in a participatory segment where attendees are invited to reflect on their role in promoting harmony and make personal commitments to fostering inclusivity in their daily lives.
The IRO Day Harmony Carnival is expected to attract up to 10,000 visitors, with a wide range of programmes tailored for families, youth, and community groups. These include talks, panel discussions, and hands-on activities designed to encourage dialogue and mutual understanding.
