The theatrical phenomenon that captured the hearts of Broadway and the West End is finally making its way to our shores. Dear Evan Hansen, the multi-award-winning musical that has become a cultural touchstone for the social media generation, is now showing at the Sands Theatre, Marina Bay Sands from now to 16 November 2025. Following a massively successful 32-venue UK tour, the production promises to deliver the same raw emotional power that has left audiences worldwide spellbound.
Hailed by the Daily Mail hailed as “the most vital and important musical of a generation”, Dear Evan Hansen is a story for our time. It follows the journey of an anxious, isolated high school student named Evan, whose life is upended after a tragedy leads to a misunderstanding that spirals beyond his control. The narrative dives deep into themes of social anxiety, the desperate need for connection, the perils of social media, and the courage it takes to be truly seen.
The music is a significant driver of the show’s impact.
Composed by the Oscar, Grammy, and Tony-winning duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (La La Land, The Greatest Showman), the score is packed with anthems that have transcended the stage. Songs like “Waving Through a Window,” a powerful ballad about social anxiety, and the uplifting “You Will Be Found” have become hymns of hope and solidarity for millions.
For its Singapore run, the production is led by a solid cast, featuring Ellis Kirk, who previously appeared in the West End production, returning for the demanding titular role of Evan Hansen, with Sonny Monaghan who alternates for the same role. The duo is joined by Rebecca McKinnis, reprising her role as Evan’s mother, Heidi, from the original London cast. They are supported by a talented international ensemble, including Zoe Athena as Zoe Murphy and Rhys Hopkins as Connor Murphy.
The production opens with the quiet trembling of its protagonist and Monaghan steps into the role of Evan Hansen with natural authenticity for the media night. Watching him lean into the anxiety, the longing, the faltering attempts at connection, will leave you feeling both empathetic and uneasy. You will feel torn between wanting to shield a helpless little brother and knowing he needs to face a few hard knocks to grow.
It is messy. It is raw. And that’s the magic of this show.
The supporting cast, from McKinnis to Zoe, all delivered respectable performances, allowing Monaghan to shine. I have not seen Kirk’s performance, but Monaghan delivered a solid performance as the alternate all the same.
Overall, this is a show that has hearts, despite the rapid desend into chaos from the intermission onwards, capped with an untidy ending. It leaves you with some profound thoughts as you walk out of the theatre.
What I left with was a sense of relief and unease in equal measure.
The “you will be found” message rings out, but also echoes with the question of the unseen, the un-spoken, the lied-about. It is a show that asks of us to look at the faces we do not always see, the voices we do not always hear. For theatre-goers in Singapore, especially younger viewers navigating a world of connection and expectation, this production offers a mirror held up to the fraying edges of belonging, and a chance to reflect.
The musical’s exploration of mental health and truth in the digital age has sparked important conversations, making it more than just entertainment.
When the final chords settle, the show does not tie everything up and maybe that’s the point. A memorable night at the theatre, for sure and one that left me thinking long after the curtain.
