[Review] Step Into a Suspect’s Mind in Sight Lines’ Thrilling Crack the Case: The Dreamcatcher

Sight Lines Entertainment’s latest installment in their acclaimed Crack the Case series, The Dreamcatcher, is a thrilling fusion of immersive theatre and escape room elements. Since its inception in 2023, Sight Lines’ Crack the Case series has carved out a unique niche in Singapore’s entertainment scene, consistently blurring the lines between narrative theatre and interactive puzzle-solving. The Dreamcatcher carries on this tradition and delivers.

Running from now to 25 October at Goodman Arts Centre, this two-hour live experience invites audiences into the fragmented subconscious of a suspected terrorist, challenging us to uncover his motives and prevent a looming attack.

The narrative centers around Kamil Noor, a scientist in the fictional city of Ikanpura, who becomes a prime suspect after a device he planted at an undisclosed location. The titular Dreamcatcher device allows participants to enter a virtually-generated version of Kamil’s subconscious, exploring it as a physical space and watching his memories unfold to uncover his plans before time runs out.

The Dreamcatcher marks the fourth Crack the Case production I have attended, having followed the series since its debut with Mind Hunter. Fittingly, Krish Natarajan, the writer and director of Dreamcatcher, also co-created the series and helmed Mind Hunter. Both works share a similar DNA, with their mind-bending, futuristic and dystopian settings that feel as if they have leapt straight out of a graphic novel or an Akira-style anime.

In many ways, this latest edition feels like coming full circle to the original concept, but with the added polish and depth that show just how much Natarajan has grown as a storyteller.

Particularly noteworthy is its seamless integration of cinematic sets, stellar live performances, and mind-bending puzzles. The immersive environment invites the audience to take an active role, moving through the set in a semi-guided way, exploring different rooms, and interacting subtly with actors to uncover vital clues. Unlike earlier editions, there are fewer moments where participants feel adrift, thanks to the decision to keep everything contained within one expansive, self-contained set.

Left to Right: Producer/ Lighting Designer, Derrick Chew; Writer/ Director, Krish Natarajan; Jon Cancio, Fahim Murshed, Masurah Oli and Tan Rui Shan

The four person cast consisting of Fahim Murshed, Masturah Oli, Jon Cancio and Tan Rui Shan, delivers powerful performances, with Tan Rui Shan’s versatile portrayal of multiple characters adding depth and complexity to the story. Commanding a formidable presence despite her petite stature, you may remember her powerful portrayal of Madam Kwa Geok Choo in Toy Factory’s Kwa Geok Choo or her stellar performance as Ah Chiam in Titoudao. In Dreamcatcher, she once again proves her mettle, delivering a performance that is both enigmatic and macabre.

For those seeking a unique and engaging night out, Dreamcatcher offers an unforgettable adventure.

Tickets for The Dreamcatcher are available through SISTIC, with prices starting at $78.

This edition of Crack the Case is notably eligible for the recently announced SG Culture Pass. For Singaporeans aged 18 and above, you can redeem a complimentary standard ticket. For those looking for an enhanced experience, a top-up of just $8 grants VIP access. The VIP package includes priority entry, access to a specially curated lounge with additional clues and hidden quests, and reserved seating at selected scenes for the most coveted vantage points.
