Singapore Biennale 2025 to Reimagine Everyday Spaces with “Pure Intention”

The Singapore Biennale 2025 (SB2025) is set to transform the city into a living gallery, bringing together over 80 artists and more than 100 artworks from around the world. Organised by the Singapore Art Museum (SAM) and commissioned by the National Arts Council (NAC), this eighth edition marks a signature event of SG60, inviting audiences to reflect on Singapore’s past, present, and future through the theme “pure intention.”

Running from 31 October 2025 to 29 March 2026, SB2025 goes beyond museum walls, activating familiar neighbourhoods and unexpected spaces across the island, from the Rail Corridor South and Tanglin Halt market to Lucky Plaza, Wessex Estate, and the Civic District.

Art in Everyday Spaces

Anchored in the idea of reframing the everyday, this Biennale invites audiences to see ordinary places through fresh eyes. Highlights include:

• Rail Corridor South & Wessex Estate – Apichatpong Weerasethakul (Thailand) and Guo-Liang Tan (Singapore) reimagine cinematic backdrops as kinetic installations, while Emily Floyd (Australia) creates a colourful open-air library.
• Tanglin Halt Market – Singaporean artist Joo Choon Lin presents a sensory performance installation that challenges how we perceive movement and change.
• Civic District – Works by Gala Porras-Kim, Tuan Andrew Nguyen, and Kapwani Kiwanga explore themes of labour, memory, conflict, and independence.

Stories of Community and Transformation

SB2025 also examines the layered histories of strata-titled malls like Lucky Plaza and Far East Shopping Centre, where immigrant communities and niche businesses have thrived amid Singapore’s rapid urban development. New commissions such as Eisa Jocson’s karaoke video series with Filipino domestic workers and Tan Pin Pin’s explorations of Singapore’s shifting timelines add voices that speak directly to social change.

At SAM’s Tanjong Pagar Distripark, the Biennale juxtaposes historic works from Singapore’s National Collection with contemporary installations like Pierre Huyghe’s Offspring, which uses climate conditions and audience presence to create ever-changing encounters.

A Global and Local Dialogue

With over 30 new commissions and artists hailing from Singapore, Southeast Asia, and countries including Argentina, Germany, South Korea, and the United States, SB2025 offers a timely global conversation rooted in Southeast Asian perspectives. Curators Duncan Bass, Hsu Fang-Tze, Ong Puay Khim, and Selene Yap, along with international contributors, bring together voices that highlight both Singapore’s unique identity and shared global concerns.
