In Singapore, where some families face the challenge of putting food on the table, a heartwarming initiative is making a difference. The Community Fridge, an effort to provide free groceries to those in need—no paperwork, no waiting, and no stigma—has expanded its reach, thanks to Give.Asia.
For the past 15 years, Give.Asia has raised over S$131 million with a 0% platform fee, empowering community-driven initiatives. Originally started in Lengkok Bahru by local changemaker Marlina, the Community Fridge has grown under Give.Asia’s guidance, earning praise from The Straits Times, CNA, and more.
The latest addition to this initiative is a Community Fridge located at Blk 190 Boon Lay and another at Blk 17 Ghim Moh Road. These fridges, created in partnership with the Boon Lay Zone D Residents’ Network, aim to support local families, including those experiencing sudden financial hardship, low-income households, elderly living alone, and individuals struggling between paydays.
Looking ahead, Give.Asia and Marlina plan to install two more fridges by the end of March and aspire to have 20 fridges across Singapore by 2025, serving over 500 families in need.
