Explore the resilience of nature in ‘5 Albizias,’ a captivating new exhibition by acclaimed artist Robert Zhao Renhui, presented by the Singapore Art Museum. Opening at Punggol Regional Library on 18 December 2024, this traveling showcase invites visitors to step into the world of the Albizia tree (Albizia moluccana)—a fast-growing migrant species that has quietly transformed Singapore’s urban landscape into pockets of thriving greenery.
The exhibition traces the Albizia tree’s journey from its origins in the Maluku Islands, Indonesia, to its flourishing presence in Singapore. Known for its ability to reclaim disturbed land, the Albizia tree symbolizes nature’s resilience amidst human intervention. Through stunning visuals of five Albizia trees, including four from Singapore—Tampines, Punggol, Jurong, and Woodlands—and one from the Maluku Islands, the exhibition reflects on the delicate balance between the native and non-native, the natural and the artificial.
Visitors are encouraged to reflect on the profound relationship between human activity and the natural world, discovering how these often-overlooked trees play a vital role in rewilding urban spaces and nurturing life in unexpected corners.
‘5 Albizias’ will travel across Singapore’s heartlands, bringing its thought-provoking message to different communities. The exhibition schedule is as follows:
