Unveiling the Central Arts Library: A New Hub for Arts and Creativity

The Central Arts Library (CAL) has officially opened, offering a vibrant new space for art enthusiasts to explore, experience, and create. With a vast collection of resources, dynamic arts programming, and state-of-the-art facilities, CAL promises to be a cornerstone for Singapore’s arts community.

A Library for Art Lovers

Spread across two key locations, CAL offers its main collection on Level 5 of the National Library Building and a pop-up library at the National Design Centre in partnership with the University of the Arts Singapore (UAS). This innovative setup includes access to books, music scores, play scripts, classical and popular CDs, as well as video recordings of films, operas, and performances.

For design aficionados, the UAS Node features a curated collection of 5,500 titles on topics such as space, people, visual, and product design, with convenient borrowing via the NLB Mobile app.

Borrow More, Do More

CAL’s groundbreaking RefToGo initiative now allows patrons to borrow over 200,000 selected titles from the General Reference Collection, including extensive arts resources. Previously accessible only at the Lee Kong Chian Reference Library, these materials can now be borrowed for up to 21 days.

A Stage for Creativity

Aspiring performers and musicians can book the Piano Practice Room or Silent Studio Room on Level 5 to hone their craft. These spaces are fully equipped with instruments, including a baby grand piano and guitars, making them ideal for jam sessions or recording demos.

Film enthusiasts can immerse themselves in CAL’s collection of 30,000 titles, ranging from theatre and opera to motion pictures, available in high-resolution formats. A cosy viewing space with a surround sound system on Level 8 provides the perfect cinematic escape.

Celebrating the Arts Through Events

Since August 2023, CAL has hosted over 90 arts programs, attracting 7,000 participants. With its official opening, the lineup expands further. From December 12 to 15, enjoy a thrilling opening weekend packed with a movie marathon, improv showcases, Taiko drumming, and even a retro Pump It Up arcade game—redeemable with every four borrowed items.

Post-opening, patrons can look forward to regular arts workshops, film screenings, and Open Stage Originals, a platform for local artists to share their work at the National Library Building.

A Creative Nexus

Situated in Singapore’s arts and heritage district, CAL’s proximity to institutions like LASALLE College of the Arts and the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts fosters collaborations and creative exchanges. Whether you’re a budding artist, researcher, or arts lover, CAL invites you to explore, create, and celebrate the arts.
