Discover Serenity in the Japanese Alps: KAI Okuhida Opens in Gifu

Hoshino Resorts has unveiled KAI Okuhida, its 24th luxury onsen ryokan, bringing contemporary comforts and traditional Japanese hospitality to the picturesque Okuhida-Onsengo hot spring village in Gifu Prefecture. This marks Hoshino Resorts’ first foray into the region, celebrated for its breathtaking natural beauty, rich culture, and world-class craftsmanship.

A Hidden Gem in the Northern Alps

Nestled at 1,200 meters above sea level in Japan’s Northern Alps, KAI Okuhida offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and a front-row seat to nature’s seasonal transformations. Located near iconic hiking spots like Kamikochi and Mount Norikura, as well as the UNESCO-listed Shirakawa-go village, this hot spring haven remains a serene escape, largely untouched by heavy international tourism.

Soothing Onsen and Immersive Culture

The ryokan’s design mimics a traditional hot spring village, with two accommodation buildings, a bathhouse featuring separate indoor and outdoor baths for men and women, and an annex connected by charming walkways. Guests can soak in mineral-rich waters from one of Okuhida’s 100+ hot spring sources, known for their diverse therapeutic properties.

Of the 49 rooms, 28 feature private open-air onsen baths with views of the majestic Hida mountains, perfect for year-round relaxation. Each room embodies the “Hida MOKU no Ma” style, blending natural wood accents with bold red tones inspired by the Takayama Festival’s vibrant floats.

Craftsmanship at Its Finest

KAI Okuhida showcases the exquisite craftsmanship of the Hida region. Signature rooms feature traditional Hida Shunkei lacquerware, mageki wood-bending headboards, and lanterns crafted from 800-year-old Sanchu Japanese paper. Locally sourced furniture by Hida Sangyo adds warmth and authenticity, creating a seamless blend of modern comfort and cultural heritage.

A Culinary Journey

Dining at KAI Okuhida is an experience unto itself. The kaiseki menu highlights Hida beef, renowned for its delicate flavor and buttery texture. Served in a straw “tsuto” wrapper, the beef can be grilled to personal preference, offering a unique twist on tradition. Meals are served on tables crafted from reclaimed wood, evoking the irori fireplaces of traditional Okuhida homes.
