Two innovative Singaporean inventions are making waves on the global stage as they compete in the 2024 James Dyson Award, a prestigious engineering competition. This year’s Top 20 global shortlist features two remarkable entries from Singapore, with the inventors vying for the chance to win S$50,500 to further develop their groundbreaking ideas.
Innovations for a Better Future
Leading the charge is Luke Goh, a graduate of the National University of Singapore and Singapore’s National Winner of the James Dyson Award. Luke developed Mammosense, an innovative tool designed to increase breast cancer screening participation. His research revealed that 46% of women avoid mammograms due to the discomfort and pain involved.
To address this, Mammosense uses technology to optimize compression force during mammograms, reducing pain by 25% and making the procedure more comfortable. Luke hopes his invention will encourage more women to undergo this life-saving screening.
Joining Luke in the global spotlight are Shane Kyi Hla Win and Danial Sufiyan Bin Shaiful, PhD graduates from the Singapore University of Technology and Design. Their project, airXeed Radiosonde, tackles a sustainability issue in the weather monitoring industry. Traditional radiosondes, used to collect atmospheric data, are single-use devices, resulting in USD190 million worth of waste and 48.4 tonnes of electronic waste annually.
Inspired by the way maple seeds fall through the air, Shane and Danial designed a reusable radiosonde with improved steering control. This allows the device to be recovered and reused, significantly reducing environmental waste.
Celebrating Innovation and Sustainability
The global James Dyson Award is judged by 14 Dyson engineers from around the world, including experts from Singapore, the UK, Malaysia, and the Philippines. Their diverse expertise spans design, product innovation, electronics, and sustainability, ensuring a comprehensive review of the shortlisted inventions.

The global winners, chosen by Sir James Dyson, will be announced on November 13, 2024.
