The 17th edition of the Perspectives Film Festival: Breakthroughs in Cinema is back with an exciting focus on the magic of visual effects. From stop-motion animation to deepfake technology, this year’s festival, running from 1-3 November 2024 at The Projector Golden Mile and Cineleisure, promises to unveil the artistry behind visual illusions that captivate audiences worldwide.
The festival opens with the Singapore premiere of Japan’s Gamera: Guardian of the Universe (1995), directed by Shusuke Kaneko. Known for its masterful use of practical effects and suitmation, this kaiju film follows a teenage girl who discovers her connection to Gamera, an ancient guardian awakened by a mystical amulet found on a mysterious atoll.
The weekend lineup continues with cinematic gems from around the world, including a double feature by Czech filmmaker Karel Zeman—Journey to the Beginning of Time (1955) and The Fabulous Baron Munchausen (1962)—and Russian filmmaker Aleksandr Sokurov’s Fairytale (2022). These films highlight an impressive range of visual effects techniques, from cel animation and stop-motion to puppetry, providing a visual feast for film enthusiasts.
