The Bhutan Film Institute (BFI) is proud to announce a special showcase of three captivating Bhutanese films at the Kingdom of Bhutan International Film Festival (KBIFF) 2024. This lineup celebrates the rich storytelling tradition of Bhutan and highlights the nation’s growing cinematic talent on a global stage.
Here’s a look at the featured films:
Directed by Karma Jerry, this emotional story follows the resilience and spirit of a woman facing life’s challenges in a remote Bhutanese village. With themes of love, loss, and perseverance, the film beautifully captures Bhutanese traditions while resonating universally.
Sonam Rinchen Kuenfel, an emerging filmmaker, presents a gripping drama about the shifting dynamics of modern Bhutanese society. Through a complex and multi-layered narrative, Boe Garp offers a deep reflection on the intersection of tradition and change, appealing to both local and international viewers.
From Academy Award-nominated director Pawo Choyning Dorji, this philosophical masterpiece contrasts Bhutan’s traditions with its journey into modernity. Set during Bhutan’s transition to democracy, the film explores the spiritual and political struggles of its characters, showcasing breathtaking visuals and thought-provoking themes.
Each of these films provides a unique lens on identity, tradition, and change, all while remaining deeply connected to Bhutan’s culture and values.
All screenings will take place at the Lugar Theatre in Thimphu. KBIFF continues to serve as a significant platform for Bhutanese cinema, fostering cultural exchange through the powerful medium of film.
