First launched in 2022, the Spirits Festival commemorates the Buddhist Ullambana Festival and the Taoist Hungry Ghost Festival, aiming to educate the public about these often misunderstood traditions. The festival highlights the shared philosophies and practices across various faiths, promoting unity in a world that increasingly needs it.
Interfaith Unity Blessings: A Gathering of Faiths for Peace
One of the festival’s most anticipated events is the Interfaith Unity Blessings, which will take place on the morning of Saturday, August 24, 2024, from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM at the Rise of Asia Museum (RoAM) in Haw Par Villa. This unique event brings together religious leaders from Taoism, Buddhism, Islam, Hinduism, and other major religions in Singapore to conduct blessings for global peace and harmony.
Originally introduced in 2022, the Interfaith Unity Blessings have become a cornerstone of the Spirits Festival, offering participants a chance to learn about the significance of local religious rituals. This year’s expanded roster of religious representatives reflects the festival’s commitment to fostering interfaith dialogue and understanding. Admission is free with registration, and walk-ins will be allowed based on availability. All registered participants will also enjoy a complimentary lunch with vegetarian options and free access to Hell’s Museum for the day.
RoAM Talk Series: Exploring Ancestral Worship Across Religions
The RoAM Talk Series, another highlight of the Spirits Festival, will delve into the theme of ancestral worship across karmic religions. Scheduled for the afternoon of August 24, 2024, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, this panel discussion will feature religious leaders from Taoism, Buddhism, and Hinduism. They will explore the similarities in beliefs about death and the afterlife, focusing on the significance of ancestor worship during the 7th Lunar Month.
Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and gain insights into these practices during the Q&A session. Tickets are available for a nominal fee of $5.00 on Haw Par Villa’s Peatix page, and all attendees will receive complimentary access to Hell’s Museum, which is usually priced at $20.00 per person.
Exhibition: Tracing the Karmic Connection
New to this year’s festival is an exhibition titled “Tracing the Karmic Connection: Syncretic Origins of the 7th Lunar Month and the 10 Courts of Hell.” Curated by Singapore History Consultants (SHC), this exhibition will explore the shared concepts of karma and samsara that link Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, and traditional Chinese beliefs. Visitors will gain insight into the historical exchange of ideas between Indian and Chinese civilizations and the spread of Buddhism from South Asia to East Asia.
The exhibition will also highlight the origins of the 7th Lunar Month and the 10 Courts of Hell, with a special focus on Da Shi Ye, a central figure in these traditions. In line with Haw Par Villa’s sustainability efforts, the exhibition will feature a unique cardboard panel system created in collaboration with Paper Carpenter, a homegrown design agency. The exhibition will be open to the public until the end of November 2024 at Cloud Pavilion.
Rebirthing Experience: A Journey of Renewal
The Rebirthing Experience, inspired by a Thai temple tradition, invites participants to lie inside a coffin as a symbolic act of shedding bad luck and embracing positive change. This contemplative exercise encourages people to confront their fears and taboos about death and the afterlife. In collaboration with Unity Casket, cardboard coffins will be used for this program, furthering the festival’s commitment to sustainability. The Rebirthing Experience will be available at Tiger Pavilion in Culture Courtyard during various time slots throughout the Spirits Festival and until the end of November 2024.

All registered participants of the Interfaith Unity Blessings and the RoAM Talk Series will receive complimentary access to Hell’s Museum, the world’s first and only museum dedicated to death and the afterlife.
