Iconic Lim Kay Khee Optical & Contact Lens Centre Closes Its Doors

Today marks the end of an era as the iconic Lim Kay Khee Optical and Contact Lens Centre ceases operations at its Balestier Road premises. Since 1946, this storied establishment has been a landmark in Singapore’s Balestier neighbourhood, renowned as one of the last “old-school” optical houses in the country.

For decades, Lim Kay Khee Optical has distinguished itself by using traditional methods to craft custom spectacles, a nearly forgotten art in the age of fast fashion. This unique approach has garnered significant media attention, with features in prominent publications such as Channel NewsAsia, TODAY, and AsiaOne, and even a shoutout from film director Royston Tan in Tatler Asia.

The shop was managed by Mr. Lim Seah Seng, the youngest son of the founder, Mr. Lim Kay Khee, alongside his sister, Ms. Karen Lim. Despite the closure, 67-year-old Mr. Lim Seah Seng plans to continue his trade. He aims to open a new store under his own name later this year across the road at Balestier Point, where he will offer the same high-quality services.

Lim Kay Khee Optical’s closure is a significant moment for the Balestier community, which has seen a resurgence in popularity among Singapore’s youth. The shop was part of a collection of vintage businesses that added charm and character to the area. Its legacy, however, will live on through the continued work of Mr. Lim Seah Seng and the memories of its loyal customers.
