The Institution of Engineers Presents the IES Scholarship Fund: New Engineering Scholarship to Nurture Young Talents

The Institution of Engineers, Singapore (IES) has unveiled the IES Scholarship Fund to support deserving tertiary students pursuing engineering education. The announcement was made during the Prize Presentation Ceremony of the Engineering Innovation Challenge (EIC) at National Engineers Day (NED) 2024, held at ITE College Central with Minister Chee Hong Tat as the guest-of-honour.

The scholarship fund, poised to reach $210,000, is supported by donations from IES-organized golf tournaments, including one scheduled for July 30, 2024. This initiative reflects IES’s commitment to nurturing young engineering talents and developing a pipeline of future-ready engineers to drive Singapore’s growth.

Each year, $38,000 from the fund will be disbursed to scholarship recipients to support their pursuit of degree, diploma, or certificate courses in engineering at the Institute of Technical Education (ITE), polytechnics, and universities.

Inaugural IES Career Fair in Partnership with NTUC

In alignment with its mission to empower future engineers, IES has partnered with NTUC to hold the inaugural IES Career Fair at NED. This event provides students from all educational levels with the opportunity to connect with government agencies, industry leaders, and professionals, discovering exciting job opportunities in engineering. This initiative underscores the dedication of IES and NTUC to support students in exploring diverse engineering career paths, equipping them to make informed decisions and achieve career success.

MoU Signing Between IES and Singapore Space and Technology Limited (SSTL)

Another highlight of the event was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between IES and SSTL. This partnership aims to open job and entrepreneurial opportunities in the space sector in Singapore and the wider region for engineering talents. Under this MoU, IES engineers will have access to conferences, workshops, and seminars on topics such as space engineering, data science in space technology, renewable energy, and infrastructure engineering innovations. They will also benefit from community-building and networking opportunities through platforms like the Global Space and Technology Convention.

EIC 2024 Prize Presentation Ceremony

At the EIC 2024 Prize Presentation Ceremony, Minister Chee presented awards to the winning student teams. The competition, designed to inspire students from secondary schools to universities, focused on creating innovative engineering solutions for real-world challenges under the theme “Innovating a Circular Economy through Engineering.” Over 200 student teams participated, addressing challenges in Renewable Energy & Material, Digital Transformation, Health Innovation, and Food Supply Chain.

Engineering Innovation Challenge 2024 Champion Teams’ Projects

Category 1 – Secondary Schools

  • Champion Team: S-4
  • School: Yuvabharathi International School
  • Project Title: Wastage to Voltage Utilizing galvanization, this project generates electricity from discarded rotten fruits and vegetables, cutting down on food waste and creating environmentally friendly electricity. The separated pulp can be used as manure. The prototype includes four half-cells and a pressure gauge connected to an app that signals overloads.

Category 2 – Junior Colleges

  • Champion Team: J-1
  • School: Hwa Chong Institution
  • Project Title: A Fishy Fertiliser Tale This aquaponics system turns waste produced by aquaculture into fertilizers for hydroponic plants, reducing wastewater treatment costs and boosting plant growth, thereby optimizing food production and creating a sustainable circular economy.

Category 3 – Polytechnics and Institutes of Technical Education

  • Champion Team: P-25
  • School: Temasek Polytechnic
  • Project Title: RSE: Your Healthy Knee Companion The RSE is an AI-powered smart knee support designed for elderly individuals with knee pain. It features a 3D-printed knee brace, sensors, an AI model, and a gamified mobile app to encourage consistent exercise routines and track muscle strength for rehabilitation.

Category 4 – Local and Overseas Universities

  • Champion Team: U-7
  • School: Hong Kong University of Science and Technology
  • Project Title: Building-Integrated Photovoltaic Panel Mounting Robot This semi-automatic system for building façade solar panels allows users to remotely monitor and track the status of each panel. The system aims to reduce potential injuries and labor costs, promoting the installation of clean energy systems on building facades.
