Genekha Matsutake Mushroom Festival

Held in Thimphu on the 15th and 16th of August, the Genekha Matsutake Mushroom Festival promotes sustainable harvesting and local awareness of wild edible mushrooms. The two-day event features displays of indigenous sports, stalls showcasing local products like wild mushrooms, non-wood products, and high-breed agricultural seeds. Thimphu Tshechu

Scheduled for the 13th to 15th of September, Thimphu Tshechu is one of Bhutan’s most celebrated festivals, drawing locals and tourists alike. This grand event honors Guru Rinpoche, the second Buddha, through colorful dances and ritual ceremonies depicting his eight manifestations. The festival is a spectacular display of Bhutanese culture, leaving a lasting impression on all who attend.

Royal Highland Festival

The Royal Highland Festival, set for October 23rd to 24th, 2024, in the highland district of Laya, celebrates the ancient traditions of Bhutan’s highland communities. The festival features highland animal competitions, folk dances, and traditional offerings. One highlight is the scenic 25 km Laya Run along the Mo Chhu River. This year’s festival also marks the start of the Snowman Race, one of the world’s toughest ultramarathons.

Zhemgang Bird Festival

Taking place from the 13th to 15th of November, the Zhemgang Bird Festival is a must-visit for nature enthusiasts. Located in the eco-tourism capital of Zhemgang, a scenic six-hour drive from Thimphu, the festival showcases over 500 bird species. Visitors can enjoy cultural performances, local cuisine, competitions, games, and hikes along beautiful bird-watching trails, making it a memorable eco-tourism experience.

Punakha Dromche Festival

Scheduled from the 24th to 28th of February 2025, the Punakha Dromche Festival celebrates Bhutan’s rich history and cultural heritage. This unique festival reenacts a significant battle fought centuries ago, featuring local militia dressed in traditional battle regalia. Sacred relics are blessed in the Mo Chhu River, and an alcohol-filled copper bowl brings spiritual upliftment to guests.
