The Institution of Engineers, Singapore (IES) has announced the inauguration of Engineer (Er.) Chan Ewe Jin as its 30th President. The announcement came during the 58th IES Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on 25 May 2024. Er. Chan, who takes over from Mr. Dalson Chung, will lead the institution for the next two years.
Er. Chan is set to propel IES forward with a comprehensive two-pronged strategy focused on strengthening the engineering profession and enhancing its impact on both national and global platforms.
In his inaugural address, Er. Chan emphasized the importance of reinforcing IES’s four foundational pillars: engineering excellence, professional development, professional registration, and internationalization. He unveiled plans for new initiatives aimed at achieving these goals.
One of Er. Chan’s key objectives is to elevate professional accreditation for engineers. This includes expanding the IES Chartered Engineers programme and refining accreditation processes to improve efficiency. He aims to scale up accreditation in sectors that are in high demand, particularly in sustainability.
Er. Chan also plans to prioritize IES members, launching new initiatives to enhance membership services and attract new members. He aims to expand outreach efforts to recruit students and young aspiring engineers into the IES community.
These initiatives align with Singapore’s national goals, particularly the Singapore Green Plan 2030 and the SkillsFuture movement, both of which aim to drive societal progress and prosperity.
Er. Chan currently serves as the Managing Director of ECAS Consultants Pte Ltd, a leading multidisciplinary engineering firm. His contributions include developing major landmarks in Singapore such as the Marina Coastal Expressway, the Thomson-East Coast Line MRT, and the Punggol Northshore HDB project.
The outgoing President, Mr. Chung, played a crucial role in advancing the engineering community’s contribution to Singapore’s sustainability agenda through the introduction of the IES Green Plan 2030. Under his leadership, IES established a robust framework for engineers to actively support the Singapore Green Plan 2030.
