What Should a Children’s Play Area Look Like in 2024?

Safety and security are paramount, but that doesn’t mean kids can’t have fun when they’re outside. This is what a children’s play area should look like in 2024!

The equipment that’s in playgrounds must now meet stricter-than-ever safety standards and regulations to make sure that children can still have fun – but their well-being stays top of the list.  Safety standards include the height and weight of equipment, where it’s going to be placed, and the materials it’s made from.

Here’s what a children’s play area should look like in 2024.

Technology is now key

Playgrounds with an element of interactive tech are key to enhancing the play experiences of kids these days. The use of interactive games and  AR and VR means that play environments are much more immersive than ever before – they’re making outside spaces much more engaging for kids.

One other fantastic innovation has been the introduction of tech such as BEAM interactive equipment. These offer outstanding ways to ensure safe gameplay.

Devices such as a BEAM interactive projector – make play times and interactive gaming even more fun. We’ve come a long way since the days of rickety slides and swings!

Full of inclusive designs

A major watchword of playground design is inclusivity these days and rightly so. Children of all physical and mental abilities must be included, and this means the introduction of lots of features for kids with sensory and cognitive disabilities. To get an idea of what this might look like – here are just a few solutions:

  • Ramps and bridges that allow children with impaired mobility to access all playground features.
  • Sensory elements like surfaces with textures, quiet/peaceful areas, and separate spaces for kids to make lots of noise!
  • Swings that are wheelchair accessible or that can be used with other adaptive equipment so that no kids are left out.
  • More visual aids – or signage in braille to help kids with sight problems.

Environmentally aware play equipment

The need to consider sustainability and the environment has fully crept into play! Using recycled plastics, reclaimed wood, and metal made from recycled materials in the production of equipment has been a game changer – this makes playground equipment safer for children and also better for the planet.

Choosing playground equipment like this –  made from sustainable products is key for 2024. It neatly aligns with the huge emphasis being placed on sustainability and reducing our carbon footprint. It also encourages children to be aware of the need to look after our planet.

Creative play is paramount

Play structures with more than one activity area are more popular than ever. Children can often feel a bit disengaged and become bored. However, multi-functional, creative play structures are designed to ensure they’re engaged and keep their imaginations alert! What sort of features to include? Think about:

  • slides
  • climbing walls
  • monkey bars
  • interactive panels

Educational elements

Play should always be about fun and letting children create and explore! However, that doesn’t mean they can’t learn at the same time. Educational elements for playgrounds are becoming increasingly popular this year.

These can include interactive panels, sensory play equipment, or even educational board games. With these elements, children pick up new skills while having fun.

Getting local communities involved

Play isn’t just for kids! Schools, nurseries, and playgroups now seek input from older students, educators, and teachers plus parents and guardians to make sure that playgrounds are safe, yet diverse and exciting places to be.

Constructing playgrounds with input from all these people fosters a great sense of pride. It means that kids will be satisfied with their playtime, and whole communities can benefit from happy, healthy people!

A playground in 2024 is a space that should engage, entertain, and find creative ways to educate at the same time. Interactivity plays a huge role – but there’s an emphasis on sustainability and the environment too.
