Mastercard has unveiled an ambitious five-year strategic partnership with Singapore Airlines (SIA), aiming to elevate travel experiences for cardholders across Southeast Asia. This collaboration solidifies Mastercard’s position as the preferred partner for SIA’s forthcoming co-branded card programs in Cambodia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
In the wake of sustained travel recovery in Southeast Asia over the past two years, consumers have exhibited a notable uptick in demand for travel and outdoor experiences. In Singapore particularly, affluent consumers allocated a significant portion of their discretionary spending—over 37%—to travel by the end of 2023, surpassing all other categories. According to the Mastercard Economic Institute’s Economic Outlook 2024, this trend is expected to continue, with consumers across the region prioritizing discretionary items such as travel.
Simultaneously, airlines are striving to cultivate brand loyalty by offering targeted loyalty programs and investing in co-branded card initiatives that extend beyond travel. By enabling cardholders to earn miles through everyday purchases and redeem them across a diverse range of brands, airlines aim to integrate their membership seamlessly into consumers’ lives, fostering existing relationships while attracting new ones.
In response to these evolving consumer preferences, the strategic partnership between Mastercard and SIA seeks to deliver tailored solutions. With Mastercard’s support, SIA will roll out co-branded credit and debit card programs across Southeast Asia, offering cardholders enticing benefits such as earning KrisFlyer miles from everyday spending and accelerated mile accrual and redemption opportunities contributing to KrisFlyer status upgrades.
Furthermore, the collaboration will extend Mastercard’s renowned Priceless platform to SIA’s KrisFlyer members, granting access to exclusive offers, global promotions, and a curated selection of experiences spanning dining, travel, sports, music, and entertainment worldwide.
This partnership also presents a significant opportunity for card issuers in Southeast Asia to participate in a strategic alliance within the travel and entertainment sectors, delivering unparalleled benefits and value to their customers.
Additionally, SIA stands to benefit from Mastercard’s suite of data and services capabilities, including Data Analytics & Consulting, innovative technology such as the Test & Learn experimentation platform and NuDetect user verification software, and the Mastercard Payment Gateway Services (MPGS) payment processing platform.
The inaugural product under this partnership debuted earlier this year in Thailand with the launch of the UOB KrisFlyer World and UOB KrisFlyer World Elite Credit Cards. These cards offer exceptional KrisFlyer miles earn rates and an array of travel benefits, including complimentary limousine services and airport lounge access, among other perks.
