Cathay Pacific Sets Ambitious Target of Net-zero Carbon Emissions by 2050

Cathay Pacific, a leading name in the aviation industry, is doubling down on its commitment to environmental sustainability with bold new targets aimed at reducing carbon emissions. In a recent announcement, the airline unveiled its plan to improve carbon intensity by 12% from 2019 levels by the year 2030, as part of its overarching goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

This ambitious target focuses on reducing carbon emissions per revenue tonne kilometre (RTK), a key metric in measuring the airline’s environmental impact. Cathay aims to lower its carbon emissions from jet fuel use to 670 gCO2/RTK, down from the 2019 level of 761 gCO2/RTK. To achieve this, Cathay will be introducing over 70 new passenger and freighter aircraft to its fleet, boasting up to 25% greater fuel efficiency compared to previous generations.

Central to Cathay’s carbon reduction strategy is the increased use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). The airline plans to offset 10% of carbon emissions from employee duty travel on Cathay Pacific flights using SAF starting in 2024. This initiative builds upon Cathay’s longstanding commitment to offsetting emissions through its Fly Greener programme since 2007. By scaling up SAF usage, Cathay aims to contribute to its target of achieving 10% SAF usage by 2030.

Recognizing the challenges in transitioning to sustainable energy, Cathay embraces a collaborative approach, aptly named “Greener Together.” The airline urges stakeholders across the industry to join forces in pursuit of environmental sustainability. To support this mission, Cathay has forged strategic partnerships with organizations along the SAF value chain, including the launch of Asia’s first major Corporate SAF Programme and co-initiating the Hong Kong Sustainable Aviation Fuel Coalition.
