Singapore’s beloved Paralympic para swimmer, Yip Pin Xiu, has made history once again as she unveiled her very own wax figure at the prestigious Madame Tussauds Singapore, located at the iconic Singapore Sports Hub. Yip’s wax figure marks a significant milestone, making her the first Singaporean para-athlete to be honored with a wax likeness at the renowned museum.
Yip Pin Xiu has left an indelible mark on Singapore’s sporting history, achieving unprecedented success at the Paralympic Games. From her groundbreaking gold medal win at the 2008 Beijing Games to her triumphs at the 2016 Rio and 2020 Tokyo Paralympics, Yip’s accomplishments have solidified her status as Singapore’s most decorated Paralympian. With two world records to her name, Yip continues to inspire audiences with her determination and resilience.
The unveiling of Yip’s wax figure, coinciding with the 2024 Paralympics in Paris, captures a poignant moment of victory from the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics, where she proudly stood atop the podium to receive her gold medal. Clad in the iconic Singapore national tracksuit worn during the Tokyo Paralympics, Yip’s wax figure exudes her signature winning smile and aura, meticulously recreated with astonishing likeness by Madame Tussauds’ team of expert sculptors and artists.
Crafting Yip’s wax twin was no small feat, requiring over six months of meticulous work to ensure every detail reflected her strength and personality. Special attention was given to ensure the figure seamlessly integrated with the wheelchair model that Yip herself uses, adding an extra layer of authenticity to the display.
The unveiling ceremony, graced by Yip Pin Xiu herself and Mr. Edwin Tong, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, and Second Minister for Law, was a testament to Yip’s enduring legacy in Singapore’s sporting landscape. The event also coincided with the announcement of Singapore as the host city for the 2025 World Para Swimming Championships, reaffirming the nation’s commitment to inclusive sportsmanship.
Madame Tussauds Singapore’s dedication to inclusivity extends beyond Yip’s wax figure, with ongoing initiatives to create inclusive spaces and programs for all visitors. As part of their community outreach, Madame Tussauds collaborates with the Singapore Disability Sports Council (SDSC) to host special needs groups at the attraction, offering discounted admission for guests with special needs and their caregivers throughout the year.
Yip Pin Xiu’s wax figure will be on display at Madame Tussauds Singapore starting from February 6, 2024, inviting Singaporeans and international guests alike to capture a winning moment with the sports icon. Visitors can also opt for a special bundle package, including admission tickets and Yip’s book “The Mermaid who became a Champion,” with proceeds supporting the development of future para-athletes through the SDSC.
As Madame Tussauds Singapore celebrates its 10th year anniversary, visitors can look forward to an array of exciting figure launches, activities, and promotions throughout the year. With over 80 incredible figures, including local luminaries like Stef Sun and JJ Lin, sports heroes like Serena Williams and Ronaldo, and international favorites such as Harry Styles, Dua Lipa, and Michelle Yeoh, Madame Tussauds offers a truly immersive and interactive experience for all.
