Your Ultimate Guide to Window Tinting

Window tinting is not something people think about every day. However, you may want to tint your windows for aesthetic value or to keep the sun out in the middle of the day. Before you rush off to the nearest car window tinting center, you must consider several factors. These include the legal percentage for window tinting in your area. In several states, for example, the darkest legal tint is 70%. You must consider the different percentages if you travel a lot using your car because you may exceed the legal percentage in another state.

Additionally, there are different window tints and shades to choose from. But let’s start with the basics: What exactly is window tinting?

What Is Window Tinting?

A window tint is a see-through dark film that attaches to car windows. Most people choose window tinting in hot states to protect them from the sun while driving. Others just like the way that window tinting makes their car look. The primary chemical in these tinting films is PET (polyethylene terephthalate). This chemical is highly flexible and durable, no matter how thin it stretches. It makes the tinting sheets scratch-resistant, and the films can even help make windows stronger.

What Is the Law Regarding Window Tinting?

Window tinting is legal in most states except New Hampshire, New Jersey, and Vermont. States that allow tinting have established regulations for drivers to follow. Most of them allow front-side windows to be tinted between 30% to 70%. Back-side windows can be anything from 15% to ‘any tint.’ Rear window tinting is limited at 70%, except in states that allow ‘any tint.’ With regards to windshields, most states allow a tinting line of six inches. Those without this restriction require visibility of at least 70%. Window tinting reflectivity should be between 25% and 35%, but several states don’t have a specific regulation.

Types of Window Tinting

You can choose from four main types of window tints depending on what you need them for.

Dyed Tint

The most popular auto window tinting is dyed film. This tint is made of layers of dyed film and is usually cheaper than other options. The downside is that there are no benefits except aesthetic and privacy values. It doesn’t offer UV protection and tends to fade over time.

Carbon Tint

Carbon tint gives car windows a matte look. They also protect against UV rays without blocking phone or radio signals. Carbon tint insulates cars to keep the interior warm in winter and blocks the heat in summer. This tint will also last much longer, but it is an expensive investment.

Metalized Tint

Metalized tint consists of tiny metal particles that lie between the film layers. This produces a reflective effect that keeps out UV rays. This tint won’t fade and can help prevent your windows from shattering. Just remember that the metal particles are known to interfere with radio and phone signals.

Ceramic Tint

Ceramic tint is the most expensive tinting option. This tint contains ceramic particles that help block up to 99% of sunlight while allowing free range for signals and frequencies. The best part of ceramic tint is that you can tint your windows up to 70% and enjoy excellent visibility. This tint is incredibly scratch and damage-resistant.

Benefits of Window Tinting

Tinting your windows doesn’t only make your car look better and block harmful sun rays. It gives you the required privacy, especially if you regularly drive with valuables in the car. It keeps your car cool and can even protect your windows from hail damage. And you should not ignore the cooling benefit. Cooler cars work more efficiently, and you won’t have to waste as much fuel running the air conditioner. Moreover, car window tinting can help you get a higher price for your car when you sell it.

Consider All Factors Before Getting Your Windows Tinted

Consider all these factors and more before tinting your windows or settling on a tint type. Choose a tint that works for your budget, climate, and personal preferences. Check that the tint installer knows the regulations for window tinting in your state. Also, ensure you get a window tint that will work in most states if you travel. Only trust a professional installer to tint your windows and ask about a warranty.

Window tinting is a great way to improve your car’s appearance and for sun protection and privacy. All you need to do is follow the guidelines, and you will enjoy your tinted windows for a long time.
