Singapore Photographer Ju Shen Lee Wins National Award in Prestigious World Photography Competition

In a celebration of talent and creativity, the World Photography Organisation and Sony Singapore have announced Ju Shen Lee as the winner of Singapore’s National Award for the Sony World Photography Awards 2024.

The National Awards program, a collaboration between the World Photography Organisation and Sony, aims to nurture and promote local photographic communities worldwide, with 54 countries participating in this year’s edition. This year saw an impressive submission of over 395,000 images from more than 220 countries and territories.

Ju Shen Lee’s winning photograph, “Elephant Sand Bath,” captured the attention of judges in the Natural World & Wildlife category of the Open competition. The image portrays the unique practice of elephants taking sand baths along the Narayani River to protect their skin from insect bites and stay warm during te cooler months.

Residing in Singapore, Ju Shen Lee brings a wealth of diverse life experiences and academic background in earth sciences to her photography. Her work reflects a nuanced perspective that transcends mere visual representation, aiming to bridge cultures and histories through her lens. She sees photography not just as an art form but as a means to ignite curiosity and empathy, particularly towards remote communities facing challenges of climate and geography.

As the recipient of Singapore’s National Award, Ju Shen Lee will receive Sony digital imaging equipment and will be featured in the Sony World Photography Awards exhibition and book.

The anticipation for the overall winners across various categories – Student, Youth, Open, and Professional competitions – of the Sony World Photography Awards 2024 is building up. The winners will be unveiled on April 18, 2024, and their works will be showcased as part of the exhibition at Somerset House, London, from April 19 to May 6, 2024.
