Preserving Heritage: Katong-Joo Chiat Shows Stories of Family, Tradition, and Resilience

Katong-Joo Chiat, with its enchanting blend of vintage charm and modern flair, invites you to delve into the captivating narratives of its heritage businesses. Nestled within the vibrant precinct are timeless tales of family, tradition, and unwavering resilience that have shaped the character of this unique neighborhood. From the hidden stories behind classic delicacies to inspiring narratives of intergenerational support and collaboration, Katong-Joo Chiat’s heritage businesses offer a captivating glimpse into the heart of this lively community.

In an initiative by the National Heritage Board (NHB), the Street Corner Heritage Galleries: Katong-Joo Chiat is set to unveil the rich tapestry of six participating businesses – Kway Guan Huat Joo Chiat Popiah, Joo Chiat Fei Fei Wanton Noodle House, Kim Choo Kueh Chang, Guan Hoe Soon Restaurant, Sin Heng Claypot Bak Koot Teh, and D’Bun. Each establishment holds within its walls a trove of history, resilience, and cultural significance.

This extension of the Street Corner Heritage Galleries scheme, following successful implementations in Balestier, Kampong Gelam, Little India, and Chinatown, is a testament to NHB’s commitment to celebrating and preserving Singapore’s heritage in everyday spaces. The scheme collaborates with owners of heritage businesses boasting at least 30 years of history to create “mini-museums.” These spaces showcase the businesses’ heritage through historical documents, photographs, and artifacts.

Empowering the Community: Our SG Heritage Plan 2.0

Street Corner Heritage Galleries: Katong-Joo Chiat aligns with NHB’s ongoing efforts under Our SG Heritage Plan 2.0 to engage Singaporeans in celebrating and supporting heritage businesses and crafts. The scheme offers curatorial support, aids in research and content development, and provides funding for showcase fabrication.

NHB will collaborate closely with these heritage businesses to develop complementary programs, such as guided trails and workshops. These initiatives aim to bring the Street Corner Heritage Galleries: Katong-Joo Chiat to life during NHB’s inaugural Heritage Activation Nodes (HAN). Launching in Katong-Joo Chiat and various precincts this year, HAN encourages community-driven projects that enhance heritage touchpoints in the heartlands, celebrating the distinctive heritage of each neighborhood.

As the curtains rise on the Street Corner Heritage Galleries: Katong-Joo Chiat, residents and visitors alike can anticipate an immersive journey through time, appreciating the essence of Katong-Joo Chiat’s unique heritage and the remarkable stories etched into the fabric of its beloved businesses.
