In a remarkable journey spanning continents, the Asian Civilisations Museum (ACM) proudly presents its latest commission—an awe-inspiring contemporary ship model of a Manila Galleon, now showcased for the public at the museum.
Crafted in Spain this year, the model faithfully captures the essence of a fully fitted and rigged Manila Galleon ship, renowned for its pivotal role in the Manila Galleon trade route connecting Asia and the Americas. These vessels were instrumental in transporting an array of precious goods, including silk, porcelain, spices, precious metals, and tobacco.
The meticulous details of the model are a testament to the historical accuracy pursued by the creators. Crafted based on construction plans found in 18th-century manuscripts, the model was commissioned by ACM and brought to life by the skilled hands of Maximo Agudo Mangas. Mangas, recognized for his craftsmanship, has previously built ship models for the Spanish royal family and various museums in Spain and Mexico.
The collaboration extended to include Dr. Iván Valdez-Bubnov, a distinguished naval historian specializing in galleon trade research. Dr. Iván’s expertise ensured that the model accurately represents the historical significance and nuances of the Manila Galleon trade.
Upon the conclusion of the exhibition in March 2024, this remarkable model will become a permanent part of Singapore’s National Collection. Its presence serves as a testament to the enduring cultural and historical connections that span oceans and centuries.
As visitors embark on this visual journey through maritime history at ACM, the contemporary Manila Galleon ship model stands as a tangible link to a bygone era, preserving the legacy of trade and cultural exchange between Asia and the Americas.
