The vibrant city-state of Singapore witnessed a spectacular culmination of creativity and culture at the 16th edition of the Affordable Art Fair. With record-breaking sales totaling SG$5 million and an impressive turnout of 16,000 art enthusiasts, the fair not only set new benchmarks but also reinforced its significant role in fostering the love for art in Singapore.
Featuring a dynamic mix of 37% local and 63% international galleries, the Affordable Art Fair served as a global platform, bringing together art from 20 different countries under one roof. The diverse showcase appealed to a broader Singaporean audience, emphasizing the growth of art culture among locals and breaking barriers to art acquisition. The fair’s cosmopolitan nature continued to attract the expatriate community, solidifying its position as a cultural beacon.
The Affordable Art Fair went beyond being a marketplace, establishing meaningful partnerships with organizations such as ART:DIS, Singapore Cancer Society, Sculpture Society (Singapore), and Art Galleries Association Singapore. These collaborations not only enriched the fair’s artistic offerings but also demonstrated its commitment to building a supportive and inclusive art community.
ART:DIS’s Debut: Marking its inaugural year, ART:DIS brought forth a significant milestone by spotlighting artists with disabilities. Seven talented artists, including emerging talents Noah Tan and Christian Lee, as well as seasoned artists Eugene Soh and Raymond Lau, showcased their unique perspectives, adding diversity to contemporary art.
Singapore Cancer Society: As the official charity partner, the Singapore Cancer Society illustrated the therapeutic power of art in mental health and cancer care. Workshops on Art Psychotherapy and Wellbeing sessions provided a platform for emotional healing and self-discovery through art.
Sculpture Society (Singapore): Elevating appreciation for sculpture, the Sculpture Society displayed captivating artworks and conducted live woodcarving demonstrations, offering visitors a deeper understanding of sculpture as an art form.
Art Galleries Association Singapore: Galleries like Aestheletic Fine Art Gallery, artcommune gallery, and Intersections actively participated, contributing to the promotion of art appreciation within the community.
The fair’s commitment to art education was evident in its interactive workshop programming, drawing enthusiastic participation from attendees. The Children’s Art Studio by Art Wonderland provided a creative oasis for the younger generation, sparking their imagination and offering a playful yet educational art experience.
A standout feature was the ‘ATM – Art Transfer Matrix,’ a performance piece by Melbourne-based artist Jackie Case. Attendees could submit ideas, and Jackie brought them to life in a unique art piece, challenging participants to ponder the true essence of artistry.
Häagen-Dazs returned as the official ice cream partner, creating a larger-than-life wonderland experience with a 3D art installation. Two new limited edition flavors, Pistachio & Cream and Chestnut Tart, added a delicious touch to the visual feast. Gourmet offerings from Group Therapy, The Cheese Deli, DAMNMEATS, Chimichanga, and Strong Flour elevated the overall experience.
As the curtains close on the Affordable Art Fair 2023, the vision for the future remains clear—to continue serving as a pivotal event for discovering and collecting art.
