The 39th edition of the vOilah! French Film Festival is set to captivate Singapore from the 9th to the 21st of November 2023, promising an exceptional cinematic journey with its most extensive lineup to date.
A Cinematic Extravaganza
With a handpicked selection of 38 films that showcase the essence of French cinema, this year’s festival is destined to be unforgettable. The lineup spans various genres, ensuring there’s something for every moviegoer, from thought-provoking documentaries to thrilling blockbusters. Moreover, there are 16 family-friendly titles, specially curated for a younger audience.
Shining a Light on Environmental Issues
In a groundbreaking move towards global awareness, the 39th vOilah! French Film Festival is taking a bold step to promote environmental consciousness – a cause that resonates deeply with audiences in both France and Singapore. A dedicated segment will spotlight this crucial issue, striving to raise awareness and initiate essential conversations about climate change.
Opening with a Powerful Message
The festival kicks off with the highly anticipated “The Animal Kingdom” (Le Règne Animal), directed by Thomas Cailley. Premiering as the opening film of the esteemed Un Certain Regard section at the 76th Cannes Film Festival, this compelling tale is set in a world plagued by a mysterious plague that transforms humans into animals. This dystopian narrative serves as a metaphor for a world ravaged by human actions.
An Array of Outstanding Films
The festival will present “The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan” (Les Trois Mousquetaires: D’Artagnan), a box-office sensation directed by Martin Bourboulon. Based on Alexandre Dumas’ classic novel, this film promises a thrilling experience with a stellar ensemble cast.
Another film to look out for is “Anatomy of a Fall,” which received the Cannes Film Festival Palme d’Or. It weaves a captivating crime mystery around Sandra and her visually impaired son, exploring the aftermath of a mysterious death.
Bringing French Cinema to Everyone
To make French cinema accessible to all, the festival will host ten free screenings of family-friendly titles at various community clubs and integrated hubs island-wide in partnership with the People’s Association. Most screenings have been dubbed in English to ensure an enjoyable experience for audiences of all ages.
Outdoor Screenings and More
The festival expands its horizons with five outdoor screenings at Sentosa from the 10th to the 12th of November. These complimentary screenings will be complemented by a French-themed Sentosa Festive Market by Sunday Social Market.
In addition, The Projector, an iconic local independent cinema, will hold a Cannes 2023 Festival focus, showcasing films that received acclaim at the Cannes Film Festival.
Meet the Stars of French Cinema
The vOilah! French Film Festival is delighted to welcome director Thomas Cailley and rising star Paul Kircher, who will participate in an exclusive Q&A session after the debut screening of their film, “The Animal Kingdom.” Vincent Perez, the director of “The Edge of the Blade,” will also be accompanied by his partner and screenwriter, Karine Silla, to present their film.
Directors Emmanuel Marre and Julie Lecoustre, recent winners of the Margritte Awards, will be in town to present their film, “Zero F*cks Given.”
