In the realm of art and innovation, a remarkable convergence is taking place to celebrate the centenary of a visionary leader. As the late Mr. Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore’s revered first and longest-serving prime minister, would have turned 100 on 16 September, a groundbreaking art exhibition emerges to pay homage to his transformative legacy.
Titled “Now Is Not the Time,” this exhibition isn’t merely a chronological stroll through history, but rather a captivating fusion of technology and creativity that traverses the past, present, and future. This immersive experience seeks to capture the essence of Singapore’s remarkable evolution, driven by the visionary guidance of Mr. Lee.
Mr. Lee’s legacy is synonymous with Singapore’s meteoric rise from a developing nation to a global economic powerhouse in a mere span of five decades. “Now Is Not the Time” encapsulates his multifaceted impact through an array of mediums – virtual production, AI, generative art, architecture, sculpture, film, and music – resulting in an all-encompassing artistic masterpiece.
At the heart of this exhibition lies a stunning collaboration between diverse artistic talents. Notably, contemporary artist Daniel Arsham presents an extraordinary series that includes a full-body sculpture of Mr. Lee during a pivotal historical moment – his declaration of Singapore’s separation from Malaysia. This unprecedented sculpture signifies Arsham’s first foray into crafting a sculpture of a global leader.
This immersive journey also spotlights the creative prowess of Singaporean artists and institutions. Works from students at LASALLE College of the Arts Film School and NYP School of Design and Media take center stage, alongside contributions from architectural firm Brewin Design Office and production company Refinery Media. Original compositions by award-winning composer Tay Chee Wei further elevate the auditory experience.
“Now Is Not the Time” stands as a monumental testament made possible by the steadfast support of distinguished Singaporean organizations. Founding Partners such as DBS Bank & Pontiac Land Group, and Partners including Allen & Gledhill, Ho Bee Land, Kuok Group, Mapletree Investments, PSA International, RB Capital, SATS, and Woh Hup have come together to honor Mr. Lee’s legacy.
As doors open to “Now Is Not the Time,” a unique tapestry of temporal layers emerges, weaving together the past, present, and future. This immersive art installation invites visitors of all ages to partake in an Instagram-worthy journey through captivating visuals and interactive experiences driven by Alternate Reality (AR) and Artificial Intelligence (AI).
The exhibition is a gift to the public, an opportunity to connect with Singapore’s history and Lee Kuan Yew’s remarkable impact.
From 10 – 24 September 2023, “Now Is Not The Time” will be open daily from 11 am to 8 pm at 25 Pasir Panjang Rd Singapore 117536. Entrance is free for individuals aged 13 and above, but registration is required, with visitors selecting their preferred time slots in 30-minute intervals.
Embark on this artistic odyssey, and together, let’s celebrate the centennial of Lee Kuan Yew’s birth in a truly immersive and unprecedented way.
