Embark on a Cultural Journey and Discover Singapore’s Identity through Travel and Food from 1800s-2000s at the National Museum

Welcome, curious minds and history enthusiasts, to a captivating exploration of Singapore’s rich heritage at the National Museum. The museum is thrilled to present not one, but two extraordinary showcases that delve into the heart of Singaporean identity, tracing the evolution through the lenses of travel and the tantalizing world of food. Prepare to be immersed in an immersive journey that spans centuries and paints a vivid portrait of our nation’s story.

Now Boarding: Experiencing Singapore through Travel, 1800s–2000s

Opening its doors on the 27th of May, this extraordinary exhibition invites you to step back in time and witness Singapore’s transformation into a sought-after destination for travelers spanning two eventful centuries. A collection of over 600 artifacts, including postcards, posters, prints, and travel memorabilia, unveils the captivating tale of how our island-city showcased itself to the world, from colonial times to the modern era.

As you enter the museum’s grand Rotunda, your eyes will be drawn to an iconic sight – the towering Changi Airport flight information display flip board, a majestic 5.3-meter tall monument to travel. Donated by the Changi Airport Group in 2020, this flip board was part of the departure experience at the airport, and now stands as a symbol of Singapore’s vibrant journey. Experience the thrill of “checking in” as you receive a “boarding pass” to explore the four thematic sections that unfold like chapters in a travel guidebook – Transport, Accommodation, Food and Beverage, and Sights and Shopping.

The “Getting Around” section unravels Singapore’s global connectivity through various modes of arrival, showcasing its evolution from rickshaws and trishaws to the modern marvel of the Mass Rapid Transport (MRT) system. Discover our strong ties to the world through Singapore Airlines (SIA), represented by the iconic first-generation Suites cabin seat from its A380 aircraft.

Dive into “Places to Stay” and witness how accommodations, from the grand Raffles Hotel to the modern marvel of Marina Bay Sands, have played a role in shaping travelers’ perceptions of Singapore. Delve into the story of Raffles Hotel, a testament to Singapore’s historical allure, while exploring the association of Marina Bay Sands with the glitzy portrayal of our city in Hollywood blockbuster Crazy Rich Asians.

“Eating Out” invites you to indulge in Singapore’s diverse culinary landscape, from timeless hawker culture to contemporary fine dining. Uncover the evolution of our food scene through kitchen utensils, hawker memorabilia, and a captivating array of restaurant menus spanning decades.

Complete your journey in “Sights and Shopping,” where you’ll explore the attractions, entertainment, and retail offerings that define Singapore’s lively lifestyle. From past Singapore Tourism Board posters to Zouk memorabilia, this section captures the essence of a nation that thrives on change and novelty.

Children’s Season: Get Curious! All About Food

Young explorers, rejoice! Our annual Children’s Season is back, and this year, it’s all about food – a topic close to every Singaporean’s heart. Inspired by the “Eating Out” section of the Now Boarding exhibition, this interactive showcase invites families to discover the fascinating evolution of our culinary identity through engaging activities and playful learning.

Step into a world where children of all ages can embark on a journey through time, exploring Singapore’s food culture from war times to the present day. Interactive spaces and family-friendly programs await, designed to spark intergenerational conversations and celebrate the delicious diversity that defines Singapore.

Get Curious! All About Food is a collaborative effort, featuring partnerships with organizations such as My First Skool, APSN Chaoyang School, and 3Pumpkins, an arts organization with a social focus.
