Sentosa introduces low-carbon “tiny houses” accommodation on Lazarus Island

A short 15-minute boat ride from the Sentosa Jetty@Cove, new accommodation, amenities and leisure activities will soon be available at the Southern Islands for guests to discover, in phases from April 2023.

With Sentosa as a gateway to the wider cluster of Southern Islands, Sentosa Development Corporation (SDC) will commence sustainable, “light-touch” activations, which aim to encourage guests to discover, form new connections and strengthen existing ones, against the backdrop of tranquil surroundings and rustic island charm.

Launching its debut in Singapore, Tiny Away Escape @ Lazarus Island will be operated by Big Tiny, the first Singaporean company to integrate the concept of “tiny houses” with ecotourism. Big Tiny reinvents tourism accommodation and challenges guests to re-think their consumption patterns through units which are compact yet retain their functionality.

You will have access to almost 128 hectares of natural landscapes to explore on the connected islands of Seringat, Lazarus, St John’s and Kias.

The five units will be the first accommodation built on Lazarus Island for short term stay. Measuring between 150sqft and 170sqft, the accommodation will be equipped to function in line with sustainable practices to reduce holidaymakers’ carbon footprint:

  • Solar energy as the main source of power, supported by the grid as a source of back-up for contingency. Energy-efficient electrical appliances are also installed to reduce the overall power usage.
  • High tech food waste recycling systems in partnership with local start-up Westcom Solutions to test innovative ways to reduce and recycle food waste from guests.
  • Sustainable composite building materials which are durable and produced from recycled plastic and wood fibre. At the end of their eventual lifespan, they can be repurposed into composite cladding for the construction of new “tiny houses”.
  • Biodegradable shampoo and body wash will be provided complimentary to guests.

Other new amenities and activities, which include a convenience store, overnight glamping experiences and non-motorised water activities, will be launched in phases around June 2023.

Currently available are bicycle rentals and the Glasshouse, an air-conditioned multipurpose space which boasts stunning views, providing a unique “out of the boardroom” green MICE experience.
