[Review] HUAWEI FreeBuds Pro 2, Co-engineered with Devialet: Best-in-Class Earbuds for Price Range

Launched in late August, the HUAWEI FreeBuds Pro 2 is co-engineered with French audio technology company, Devialet, promising an elevated listening experience and industry-leading noise cancellation capabilities.

Retailing at S$298 (currently on promotion for S$267 on Lazada.sg), what justifies its almost S$300 price tag?

Dual Speaker True Sound

With the FreeBuds Pro 2, you can enjoy bright and precise treble and overtones while also having bass that packs a punch. This is attributed to its ‘Ultra-hearing True Sound Dual Driver’ sound system that gives the FreeBuds Pro 2 a wide range of 14Hz to 48kHz to present sound details accurately.

Triple Adaptive DQ

In addition, the earbuds also use ‘Triple Adaptive EQ’ technology to automatically tune audio according to your ear canal structure, posture and volume level. This is to ensure a personalised and high-definition sound experience for everyone, regardless of where and at what volume you are playing your music at.

HWA and Hi-Res Audio Wireless Certified

It is often hard to discern claims on audio quality. For the the FreeBuds Pro 2, HUAWEI made sure they got the necessary certification from internationally recongised experts. The FreeBuds Pro 2 supports LDAC high-resolution codec and is certified both by HWA and HiRes Audio Wireless, supporting blazing-fast transmission of up to 990 kbps, and transmitting pure high-fidelity sound.

Intelligent ANC 2.0

Besides top-quality music, the FreeBuds Pro 2 is equipped with ‘Intelligent Dynamic ANC 2.0’ that accurately identifies your ear canal structure, external sound field environment and wearing status, and selects one of the three optimal noise canceling mode in real time.

Pure Voice

The FreeBuds Pro 2 also comes with an exclusive aircraft noise cancellation curve that is capable of eliminating roaring aircraft engine noises on flights. I tested this while on an air flight and it did work. I have very sensitive ears that cannot tolerate loud noises due to an inborn hearing defect – this feature comes in really handy for me.

Phone calls will also be clear and quiet thanks to the FreeBuds Pro 2’s new Pure Voice call noise cancellation technology and its 4-microphones, it is able to accurately pick up human voices. Its new hidden wind-proof design also effectively reduces wind noises, ensuring excellent call quality even amidst strong winds.

Dual Device Connection

The HUAWEI FreeBuds Pro 2’s dual connection feature offers seamless connection with two devices for automatic call switching. This feature works with Huawei all-scenario devices including smartphone, tablet, PC and Watch, as well as with Android, iOS and Windows smart systems.

The ‘Audio Connection Centre’ also lets you view the last 10 devices connected to the earbuds for easy switching between multiple devices. This can be automatically detected on the Super Device screen of Huawei PCs, tablets, phones, or Vision TVs, and easily connected with a simple drag and drop.

This is a super duper useful feature for me as I always carry two mobile phones (one Android and one Apple). Switching the Bluetooth connection around can be a real hassle, not to mentioned the gazillion other gadgets I have like my three laptops, two tablets, two smart TVs and two smart projectors!

Long Battery Life

This small but powerful pair of earbuds comes with a long battery life of up to four hours playback time with ANC on and a total of 18 hours with the case. With ANC off, you can enjoy six and a half hours of playback and 30 hours with the case.

For those who are always on-the-go, you can benefit from reverse charging on the earbuds case with your phone or tablet. What’s more, you need not fear hot or rainy weather as the earbuds are equipped with IP54 water splash resistance.
