11 Factors to Consider Before Moving to a New City after Marriage

You’ve gotten married to your love and, after a few days, received a lucrative job offer in another state and now are looking to move. It can be overwhelming as you are a new couple who have just started living together and are still getting to know each other. Now throw in the challenges that come with moving to a new place, new job, and the process of making new friends.

It can get overwhelming, but with the right tips, you will breeze through the move and enjoy your new home. When you move to a new city, you must consider a few things. These include

1. Prenuptial Agreement

We all get married to stay with our partners forever, but sometimes things happen, and people divorce. It would be quite frustrating to get a divorce in a place far away from your family. Therefore, when signing your marriage contract, including a prenuptial agreement clause stating how properties obtained during the marriage are to be divided is vital.

2. Talk With Your Partner About Your Expectation

Moving to a new state is no easy feat as you’d need to plan for your move, look for a house in the new state and prepare it. While doing all that, it would be best to have a heart-to-heart with your partner and discuss your expectations.

It can get quite lonely, so you must discuss how to make time for each other. Remember, you are still getting to know each other better, so creating bonding time is essential to strengthening your marriage.

3. Financial Standing

Where are you financially as a couple? You must discuss your finances in detail, from debts, savings, expenses, and investments. This will help you figure out how much the move will cost you. You can also estimate how much your living expenses will be in the new state.

4. Visiting the City Before the Move

It would be wise to visit the city before the actual move. This helps you assess the area where you’ve secured a house and figure out if you’d enjoy living there.

You’d also be able to observe their culture, from art, food, music, and sports.

5. Clearing the Clutter

If you are moving to a new city or house, you have an excellent chance of clearing the clutter in your home. This means eliminating those items you are holding on to and don’t use. These could be old clothes that you love but no longer fit you. Or old and outdated furniture items.

Clearing the clutter ensures that you only carry the essentials. It also opens up space for new and better things. Make sure to hire a reputable moving company. Some even clean your new home before unpacking and removing the junk from your home.

6. Hire Professional Movers

After clearing the clutter, you can now hire professional movers to pack up your house and transport your things to the new city. The best part about using movers is that they make your transition smooth. This is because they bring packing boxes, and upon getting to the destination, they unpack and arrange the things following your instructions.

7. Mental Preparation

Moving to a new city immediately after getting married can be trying for a couple. Therefore, you must be prepared to face all the challenges and celebrate together. It won’t be a smooth ride, so always keep an open mind and remember you are not alone; together, you can emerge stronger.

Some of the things you can do for a smooth transition include:

  • Take your time: Moving does not end in a day or two, so don’t rush yourselves as it will only create room for frustrations. If you knew of the move before the wedding, plan slowly, and talk to your family about your fears as it will help ease the tension.
  • Be each other’s support system: You are not alone, so take pride in leaning on your partner for support when things get complicated.
  • Take the move as a new opportunity and embrace it, and you’ll find that you will enjoy the scenery change. Try to go out together and explore your new city as much as possible.

8. Transportation

What are the means of transport in the new state? People often tend to forget that transportation is a significant expense. Taking a cab to and from work could be pretty expensive. And this makes owning a car a more viable option. The vehicle will also come in handy when you want to explore the city over the weekend.

9. Employment

If your hubby got the job offer, you must consider how easy it is to get a job in your field of work in the new city. Research the new state’s job market and employment opportunities and start applying before your move. Who knows, maybe you’ll have gotten several job or interview offers by the time you move.

10. Weather

Maybe you were used to hot weather all year round, and the new state is relatively cold, meaning you’d have to adjust your wardrobe to accommodate the cold climate.

The weather conditions in the new state could also impact your social life, lifestyle, and utility bills. If you have to keep the heating system or air conditioner on most of the day, you will have a staggering electricity bill by the end of the month. So having planned for the weather change will help you adjust your budget accordingly.

11. Education

If you don’t already have kids, you must have plans of having some in the future. Therefore, you must ensure that the education system in the new state is nothing short of outstanding. You may also consider furthering your studies; having reputable universities and colleges is paramount.

Final Thoughts

Marriage is not always a breeze; moving to a new city immediately after marriage can make it harder. However, the move can be bearable with open communication, mental preparation, and support from each other. You can also consider hiring professional movers to help. And above all, spend time together exploring the new city, and you might find it even better.
