[Review] Spin Paint House – Everyone can be an artist with Spin Art (and it’s messy but fun)

Have you heard of Spin Art?

The technique dates back to the 1960s and can be seen in the works of notable contemporary artists such as Damien Hirst, Swarez and Callen Schaub. These artists often have to build their own machines to achieve the speed they desire and accommodate large canvas. At Spin Paint House, the setup is done for you and anyone can join in the messy, but fun painting technique.

My son Asher and I headed down for a session together over the weekend to try our hands at spin painting and what fun we had!

Located in a light industrial building Kaki Bukit, a friendly Spin Paint House staff will greet you once you step out of the lift door and enter the premise. We were wowed by the vibrant mix of colours everywhere and couldn’t wait to get our hands dirty painting.

Each spin painting session can be booked in blocks of 1.5 hours in one of their dedicated booths. You get to choose from an assortment of regular 150ml paints and special 100ml paints in metallic or neo colours. Prices start from $65 for a single pax session to $550 for a ten pax session.

The paints used are child-safe tempera paint from New Zealand which does not have any chemical odours, is environmentally friend, non-toxic and formulated to international safety standards. It is also gluten-free and does not contain dairy, egg, gluten, soy or peanut products, by-products or derivatives if you are worried about some paint splatter getting into your orifices.

However, do note that the paint may stain clothing. Hence dress in clothes you don’t mind getting stained when you go for your session. The paint is body safe though and washes off easily with running water.

The painting is done DIY and at your own time, own pace. A staff from Spin Paint House will first demonstrate all the basic techniques you can use to craft your spin painting and provide some tips and tricks. This is the time to ask all the questions you need. For instance, spinning the table at high speed will give a diffusion effect while using pendulum and trapeze props at a slower speed can create sleek waves.

After the demonstration, we were led to our own booth to start painting. A canvas will be mounted and setup for you by the staff, along with a ring light and a mobile device holder so you can record your spin painting session on your mobile phone for safe keep – how considerate!

It was truly a mighty lot of fun for both of us. For me, I found it therapeutic to see the colours swirling around and that a work of art can actually come out of this messy, but fun session. I found the session to be a great bonding session for me and my son. Asher was highly engaged in the process and was thinking of different ways to make his painting more attractive to reflect his style.

Upon completion of your artwork, the canvas will take up to 48 hours to dry and is best left at the venue to be collected at a later date when it is completely dried. Delivery can be arranged to one location at a fee of $25.
