[Wai Hai Lou 外海楼 @ Chinatown] Chee Cheong Fun Handmade Fresh Daily

It is not very common to find Chee Cheong Fun (Steamed Rice Rolls, 猪肠粉) handmade from scratch in Singapore due to the labor and skills required in making this traditional street snack.

So, were we excited to learn that there’s a restaurant in Chinatown offering this quintessential Canton delicacy, made from scratch manually, at very affordable prices!

Wai Hai Lou (外海楼), nestled in the heart of Chinatown, is ready to tempt your palate with their Chee Cheong Fun. Not many know of this hidden gem yet due to the recent closure of the Chinatown Food Street for upgrading works.

A specially chosen variety of rice (out of 17 varieties) is hand-ground on-site using an actual stone rice mill imported from China. The chef behind the Chee Cheong Fun has more than 10 years of experience under his belt!

A-ROLLIN’ WITH THE RICE ROLLS

What results is exceptionally soft but thin rice sheets after steaming, while still retaining the underlying sweet aroma of the rice — something that typical machine-made rice sheets cannot replicate

Pork Rice Roll, $5.50. Admire the soft folds of the cushion-y rice rolls.
Pork Liver Rice Roll, $7. The liver is cooked just right.

Besides Chee Cheong Fun, the restaurant also offers other southern Chinese favorites:

The broth of the Beef Brisket is brewed using three types of meat: pork chicken and beef. What results is a flavorful broth that is not too heavy and sure to warm your tummy.
