In celebration of Singapore’s 54th year of independence, Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall (SYSNMH) will present an array of free public programmes from 9 to 10 August 2019 in conjunction with National Day.

Heritage Hurray! invites the public to acquaint themselves with Singapore’s rich cultural scene and provides Singaporeans with various touchpoints to immerse themselves in our shared heritage.

Here are 10 things to look out for at Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall this National Day:

1. Community Art Market

2. Sharing Session: Design and Sustainability with Beatrix Ong

The Memorial Hall is proud to present an intimate sharing session by London-based designer and descendant of Chinese revolutionary Dr Sun Yat Sen, Beatrix Ong who will speak about her journey in sustainable design and craftsmanship, and her upcoming collaboration with the memorial hall.

3. Ang Ku Kueh & Kueh Lapis Vinyl Toy Painting Workshop

Reflecting the traditional Chinese belief that tortoises will usher longevity, good fortune and prosperity, the ang ku kueh, or commonly known as the Red Tortoise Cake, has a chewy consistency with a sweet and smooth paste at its centre. On the other hand, the kueh lapis, an expression of Southeast Asia’s benevolent hospitality, is a multi-layered savoury cake. Both are amongst Singapore’s most well-loved traditional snacks that have withstood the test of time. 4. Lion City Sketching Workshop

Join Thai artists Ohm Chongthanatrakol and Tai Sanguanpong from Just Sketch in this Lion City Sketching Workshop, and learn how to capture Singapore’s rich architectural heritage in your very own black and white sketch!

5. Heritage Kueh Soap Crafting Demonstration

Specialising in handcrafted cold-processed soap, Crafter’s Studio prides itself on using only naturally sourced ingredients in its organic soap products. 6. Icons of Singapore Doodling Workshop

With a passion for drawing that piqued since she first learned how to hold a pencil, Stephanie Raphaela Ho founded Muffinsaurs Studio and has since made a name for herself with her stunning animal wall murals and quirky illustrations. Join Stephanie in this fun and light-hearted doodling workshop and learn to sketch quintessentially Singaporean icons such as the beloved Merlion and the awe-inspiring Marina Bay Sands!

7. Art for Singapore Workshop

Join us in this sensory play activity where children will be encouraged to have fun, create and express themselves freely without inhibition! 8. Miniature Clay Sculpting Workshop

From miniature plates of nasi lemak to trays of dim sum and Nyonya kuehs, there’s nothing that Malaysian clay artist Ling of TinyPinc Miniatures can’t create! Join Ling in this Miniature Clay Sculpting Workshop to learn more about the different kinds of colourful kuehs usually seen in Nyonya cuisine, and get crafty creating your own tray of miniature kueh arrangements from polymer clay!

9. Stories of Our Nation

Discover the stories behind our little red dot with our popular storytelling sessions conducted by local authors and veteran storytellers. Embark on a literary adventure with heart-warming stories such as What’s Inside the Red Box by Phua San San, a whimsical tale about Singapore’s Founding Father, the late Mr Lee Kwan Yew and his famous red briefcase.

10. Balestier Heritage Trail – National Day Edition!
