Where to stay in the UK for a countryside retreat

YTL Hotels announced the official opening of Monkey Island Estate, Bray-on-Thames. Monkey island has a rich history dating back 800 years, and was once the stomping ground monks, monarchs, aristocrats and writers alike. The iconic white bricked Pavilion and Temple building will form the main hotel areas of Monkey Island Estate, surrounded by picturesque views of River Thames and beautiful English country gardens.

The boutique hotel that sits across seven acres is an oasis from the hustle and bustle of city life.

The décor of Monkey Island marries traditional features with a modern and laid back countryside style. Award-winning New York-based Champalimaud Design is responsible for the design of the 41 bedrooms and suites. Champalimaud Design also orchestrated the interiors of YTL’s first British property, The Gainsborough Bath Spa, and most recently the refurbishment of The Academy, Bloomsbury.

Relaxation and pampering in Bray-on-Thames can be found at The Floating Spa, moored on the banks of the island. Wellness experts at Spa Village have created signature treatments. Inspired by the monks who once inhabited the island, each spa treatment will begin with a sensory ritual and ‘Elixir Tasting’ of one of monk-made ancient herbal tonics.

The culinary excellence of Bray-on-Thames makes Monkey Island Estate the perfect foodie pilgrimage with it being the only village in the world that lays claim to three Michelin-starred restaurants such as The Fat Duck and The Waterside Inn. Monkey Island will also be making its mark on the area with Monkey Island Brasserie, helmed by Executive Chef William Hemming.

Signature dishes include Monkey Island Estate smoked Salmon, 35 Day Dry Aged Sirloin Steak and Old Spot Pork Belly. Guests can enjoy a digestif at TheMonkey Bar or The Whisky Snug which offers thoughtfully curated whiskies and cocktails.

For entertainment, there’s also a clay pigeon shooting range near the hotel.

Nightly rates at Monkey Island Estate start from £275. Visit here for more info.
