Despite the three hour queues (but hey, this isn’t new to Singaporeans), the first new A&W branch in Jewel Changi airport proved to be everything people wanted and more.
With favorites such as the root beer float, curly fries and burger available at only one branch, Singaporeans who’ve been craving for these food items didn’t mind the trouble of queuing.
But it was as bad as anyone thought, with A&W Singapore releasing this statement, where they said that they would be closing their queue as early as 8:00 in the evening despite being open until 10:00 pm. This is only for the first few days that they’re open as they refine their production line. The response to their launch was simply overwhelming.
Beginning April 17th, their operation will be for a full 24 hours, so queues may abate.
The post says:
Updated 15 April : Due to the overwhelming support from all A&W fans, our last order for the night during the preview of Jewel Changi Airport will be from 8pm to 8.30pm, pending the waiting time of 1.5hrs to 2hrs to food collection.
It has been an amazing three days in Jewel Changi Airport.
For everyone that is asking, A&W® Restaurants will be open from 10am to 10pm during the previews and we will operate 24hours from 17th April onwards.
Predictably, Singaporeans who were and were not able to go to the brand all had opinions on how the experience went and how it should go. WE were there to catch the launch too, and it also felt like the whole country had descended on the first branch, or had their eye on it.
This commenter seems to have noticed that the people in line may have only been at the newly-opened branch for the fabled root beer float. We really can’t blame Singaporeans for missing this iconic beverage, but the suggestion in this comment has a lot of merit.
This comment has a lot to say, especially as the person who wrote it waited for two and a half hours. They pointed out that the root beer float used for takeout leaves much to be desired, as there is a tendency for the drink and ice cream used to spill.
They also had a lot to say about the Coney Dogs and other menu items. Looks like this customer experienced terrible things on opening day.
This commenter, on the other hand, also pointed out that the queues were insane because of takeaway orders and that the restaurant seats weren’t even that full.
Here are some of our shots from queuing at the store:
Just a few counters for hundreds of ravenous customers.
The line could discourage anyone but we persevered!
At least they were upfront about the wait, and everyone knew what they were getting into.
It was definitely worth the wait, though!
While the officials from the brand have mentioned to Alvinology that the second branch of the restaurant will be open in a few months, the location is still a mystery. So make sure to watch this space to get first dibs on the second A&W Singapore outlet.
