Endangered Ray Finds Its New Home at S.E.A. Aquarium

One of the world’s rarest rays finds a new habitat this Christmas season.

S.E.A. Aquarium in Resorts World Sentosa celebrates this year’s Merry Fishmas with the newest addition to their aquamarine family – the endangered ornate eagle ray. The first time of its kind to be featured in zoos and aquarium.

Ornate eagle ray is a shy sea creature known for its unique pattern of reticulate dark lines and rings on its back. The ray can grow up to 5m with a wingspan of up to 240cm. For guests who like to learn more about the striking ornate ray, they can find them at Shipwreck Habitat in S.E.A. Aquarium along with shark ray, green sea turtle and hawksbill turtle.

Mr Jason Horkin, Senior Vice President of Attractions, Resorts World Sentosa, said: “The ornate eagle ray is indeed an extremely rare and precious wonder in our marine life collection. We are pleased it has settled comfortably into its new home at S.E.A. Aquarium and has even responded positively to our aquarists during feeding sessions.”

Listed as “Endangered” in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, the main threat to the species is accidental capture by fishermen in the waters of Australia, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Maldives, Taiwan and Thailand. In addition, the species has a low reproduction rate.

S.E.A. Aquarium Festive Fun

In addition to the Merry Fishmas celebration, S.E.A. Aquarium will also host other exciting activities for guests to enjoy starting 1 to 31 December 2017.
