The 2017 Christmas Menus at Lawry’s The Prime Rib at Mandarin Gallery

It has been a good six years since I last dined at Lawry’s The Prime Rib at Mandarin Gallery. I love their signature roast beef and spinning bowl salad and I am glad these dishes as well as most part of their menu have been kept the same through the years.

Rich in heritage (via the official website), the original Lawry’s The Prime Rib was founded on La Cienega Boulevard in Beverly Hills by a Lawrence L. Frank and a Walter Van de Kamp. Much of the splendor of the meal was in the way each part of the dinner was prepared and presented. Lawrence designed the famous “Silver” carts so the beef could be carved at tableside. Through the years, the basic elements of Lawry’s The Prime Rib have remained virtually unchanged. It is still a family business, with the second and third generations of Franks and Van de Kamps working side by side in the restaurants’ operation. Modifications and improvements have been made to meet today’s demands, but the meals served remain timeless.

Me with Chef Sherwin Sim

For the year end festive period, Lawry’s Executive Chef Sherwin Sim crafted three unique Christmas menus to wow diners. All menus include Lawry’s signature roasted USDA prime rib of beef, carved and served with US Idaho mashed potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, whipped cream horseradish and a choice of creamed corn, creamed spinach or buttered peas. Aged for 21 days and marinated for two days before a 4-hour slow roast, each bite of the prime rib of beef is bound to provide a melt-in-your mouth satisfaction to kick off the celebrations.

What were the standout dishes?

The fried oysters. I do not eat oysters as I am not a fan, but I accidentally ate one of the fried oysters and actually savoured it whole. It tasted pretty good, even for a non oyster fan like me!

The roast beef is faultless as usual and truly is a timeless classic at Lawry’s. You have to eat it when you dine at Lawry’s.
