This may come as a surprise to many, but the air quality at home is usually much more polluted than outside.
According to this article in the South China Morning Post, indoor air pollution, the degradation of indoor air quality by harmful chemicals and other materials, can be up to 10 times worse than outdoor air pollution. This is because contained areas enable potential pollutants to build up more than open spaces do.
I have a very sensitive nose and I am allergic to dust mite. I found about my allergy after going for a clinical test. My son, Asher, inherited similar traits and is very sensitive to air pollution as well. As such, we have to use a special vacuum cleaner that can suck up dust mites to keep our noses dry.
If you share the same concern as our family does with indoor air pollution, another solution is to invest in an air purifier. This is useful not just during the haze, but on a daily basis to clean out the finer and less noticeable pollutants in the air at home.
How to choose an air purifier
When choosing an air purifier, make sure to find out that is able to filter out PM2.5 particles. The National Environmental Agency (NEA) recently introduced his new measurement unit as an official indicator of air quality in place of PSI and would serve as a good gauge.
Another area to look out for is for a high Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) rating, a universally recognised standard. The CADR ratings were developed by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) in America and the ratings are recognised by retailers, manufacturers, standards organizations, and government bodies such as the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the Federal Trade Commission.
Philips Air Purifier Series 2000
The Philips Air Purifier Series 2000 is the first air purifier available in Singapore that has three smart auto modes (pollution, allergen, virus and bacteria modes) for you to choose from based on your needs. It also has a high CADR rating and is able to filter out PM2.5 particles.
AeraSense technology
The purifier is fitted with Philips’ innovative AeraSense technology. AeraSense is a sensor that accurately identifies fine particles that are even smaller than PM2.5 (including most common indoor airborne allergens). It then processes this information to ensure that the purifier’s settings are at the ideal level for current air conditions, and for continuous re-assurance. Then gives you feedback of real time indoor air quality by showing PM2.5 level.
VitaShield IPS technology
Phillips’ Vitashield IPS technology can effectively remove ultra-fine particles as small as 20nm, effectively reduce harmful gases such as formaldehyde, TVOC and odor. As such, the purifier boosts the capability to effectively remove 99.97% particles.
Great UX
You know those purifiers that make loud purring sound? What’s the point of having clean air if it disrupts your peace and quiet at home. The Series 2000 has a Silent Mode whereby the purifier will turn down its fan speed and noise level to allow a comfortable night’s sleep. The lights on the Purifier can also be dimmed and/ or turned off to suit your preference.
To allow you to monitor air quality easily at a glance, there is a 4-step colour ring to provide real time feedback of your indoor air quality.
The Series 2000 also has 3 automatic purification settings: a General mode, an extra-sensitive Allergen mode, and an extra-powerful bacteria and virus mode. You can choose your preferred mode to personalise and optimise your purification.
I have tested the Series 2000 at home for the past few weeks and so far the experience has been great. I will further monitor if my nose gets ticklish again.
