First Look at Huawei P10 Plus with Latest Leica Dual Camera

Having used and love my Huawei Mate 9, I was very excited to get my hands on the latest Huawei P10 Plus with Leica Dual-Camera and new camera features. I’ve not used the P10 Plus much except for some random shots over the weekend, and I’m sharing some personal thoughts of this new phone because friends have been asking about it.

Since the main highlight is the camera, I’m only going to be sharing some personal experience with it so far.

Better Camera for Low Light

The Huawei P10 Plus comes with the latest Leica Dual-Camera 2.0 Pro Edition that incorporates artistic portrait enhancement technologies such as 3D facial detection, dynamic illumination, natural colour or monochrome bokeh, automated wide aperture effect, and the Huawei Hybrid Zoom that allow macro close-up shots. It also comes with the new *SUMMILUX-H Leica rear camera lenses with larger apertures (F/1.8) for brighter photos. The Dual-Camera system features a high resolution 20-megapixedl monochrome sensor and a 12-megapixel colour sensor.

*SUMMILUX lens is a step below Leica’s top of range SUMMICRON lens. It is a ultra-speed lense optimized for low-light photography. The SUMMILUX are also very popular for general use, even though their optical performance lags slightly behind the SUMMICRON. (Source)

You can now have the bokeh effect (wide aperature effect) when in monochrome camera mode. The above shot was taken with the demo unit and I didn’t download it! So this is an image of the image I shot on the Huawei P10 Plus taken with the Canon camera in the shot. (Did I just confused you? Ha!)

Better Selfies with World’s First Leica Front Camera

With the Huawei P10 Plus, you get an 8-megapixel Leica front camera and you can snap selfies with bokeh effect. The camera also comes with an automatic wide angle mode when more faces join the group for a wefie shot.

The all-new intelligent facial detection system allows for quicker and more accurate facial recognition, giving you better beautification for self or group portraits.

More Vivid Photos

The Huawei P10 Plus produces very vivid and to some users, it may seem over saturated. You either love it or you’ll hate it.

Lacks speed

The Huawei P10 Plus is great for still photos and selfies, but it lacks the speed required to shoot sharp images of moving objects, pets and kids. For foodie who loves taking photos of your every meal, this is the phone to get. You’ll probably leave your point-and-shoot at home after trying this out.

Overall, I like the improved cameras on the Huawei P10 Plus. But if you ask if I’ll swap my Huawei Mate 9 with the P10 Plus, I’m not. The battery life on the Mate 9 is more desirable than the better camera on the P10 Plus. Till Huawei brings the P10 Plus camera to a Mate 10, I’ll upgrade for sure.

Here are some close up of the Huawei P10 Plus compared with my Huawei Mate 9. Yes, that’s a Huawei not an iPhone! *Ahem*

Huawei P10 Plus comes with 128GB storage and 6GB RAM in Dazzling Gold (Hyper Diamond-Cut) and Graphite Black (Sandblast) will be available in Singapore from 15 April 2017 at S$998.
