The Great Authentic Singaporean Cuisine

There can be few locations that are better geographically placed to take in the best of global food than Singapore. And with some cutting-edge new restaurants being catered to by smartphone-assisted delivery companies, we can all enjoy some wonderful Singaporean cuisine at just the push of a button.

There’s been something a revolution in ‘Mod-sin’ food in recent years. With newly developed cooking techniques and innovative use of fusion flavours supplementing many Singaporean classics, it’s now fairly easy to track down new favourites like Laksa Pesto Pasta or the delicious Buah Keluak dessert.

If you’re looking to a good introduction to this culinary revolution, then the legendary The Quarters restaurant would be a great place to start. With a daring use of global influences and an unfussy approach to street food, The Quarters on Enggor Street offers a great showcase for how Singaporean cuisine is evolving in the 21st century.

Whereas the wonderfully chic Coriander Leaf restaurant in Chijmes offers a modern take on a variety of pan-Asian dishes to come up with something startling and new for even the most jaded of palates. What’s great is that you can see head chef Samia Ahad and her colleagues preparing your meal in the action-packed kitchen.

So whether you’re picking up a salad of smoky mini-octopus or heading straight to the wonderfully juicy Ahad’s spicy frontier chicken, it shows how the modern Singaporean food scene is constantly evolving.

But if you’re looking to get the ultimate in traditional Singaporean treats like Char Kway Teow, then the wonderful Grandma’s in Raffle’s City can deliver you straight to food heaven. And whilst Malaysian imports like Nasi Lemak may be traditional favourites, when you can get them delivered to your door by a company like Deliveroo, it shows just how fast things are changing in how we can enjoy some pan-Asian classics.

Many Singaporean food fans have debated where’s the best place to pick up the ultimate authentic dish, Mee Siam. And the much-loved Kopi Roti House on Eu Tong Street does a fantastic goreng version of the fragrant classic that’s well worth checking out, particularly when accompanied by a Milo Dinosaur drink.

So whilst the likes of Deliveroo have updated our delivery options, and the current Mod-Sin trends continue to show an impressive evolution, it looks like there are still some classic Singaporean staples that will always be amongst our favourites!
