A Taste of Hong Kong’s delight – Mak’s Noodle and Honolulu Café

This post was written by Cheryl Lim of ASIA 361

Michelin-starred Mak’s Noodle has launched a new menu “The Bigger, The Better” to celebrate the year of the Rooster. There are five new dishes to usher in a bountiful new year and they are exclusive to the outlets in Singapore. After receiving feedback from its Singapore customers, Mak’s Noodle has responded with a bigger noodle portion.

The bigger, the better: the previous bowl size (left) vs the new bowl size (right).

Famous for its classic springy noodles, this new menu by Mak’s Noodle will not disappoint. The Abalone and Dumpling Tossed Noodle and the King Prawn Tossed Noodle are the highlight of this new menu. You can expect the same level of springiness for the tossed noodle as you would in Hong Kong.

Abalone and Dumpling Tossed Noodle (S$14.80)
King Prawn Tossed Noodle (S$13.80)

My personal favourite is the Shiitake Mushroom & Fresh Prawn Wonton Tossed Noodle (S$8.80), simply because the shiitake mushrooms are very succulent and each of the wanton is wrapped with whole, fresh prawn. Furthermore, the soup that is stewed from flatfish helps to enhance the taste of the dish. If you are not a fan of tossed noodle, the Shiitake Mushroom & Fresh Prawn Wanton Noodle Soup is a good alternative.

In addition to Mak’s Noodle’s savoury feast, here’s another café that can satisfy your sweet tooth. Honolulu Café, well-known for its baked goods, has introduced its Bean Curd Tarts. Just like the café’s famous Egg Tarts, the silky-smooth bean curd filling is made in-house from scratch and encased with a buttery melt-in-mouth shortcrust pastry.

However, unlike the egg tarts which are best eaten fresh from the oven, the bean curd tarts are chilled overnight and are best consumed within half an hour of purchase. I personally enjoyed the Bean Curd Tarts more than the Egg Tarts as the former is something not commonly seen in Singapore and the unique texture of the bean curd filling captured my attention. The Bean Curd Tart is certainly a must-try when you visit Honolulu Café!

If you are fond of Honolulu Café’s famous Egg Tarts, you should try the Bean Curd Tarts with the new “Yuan Yang” set, which consists of two Egg Tarts and 2 Bean Curd Tarts.

With the new menu at Mak’s Noodle and Honolulu Café, these Hong Kong delights will definitely give you a bang for the buck. Gone are the days where you need to get an air ticket to Hong Kong to enjoy their local delights!
