SING is a 2016 American 3D computer-animated musical comedy film produced by Illumination Entertainment (Despicable Me, Minions). The film stars the voices of Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Seth MacFarlane, Scarlett Johansson, John C. Reilly, Tori Kelly, Taron Egerton, and Nick Kroll.
I caught the preview last week and I found it to be the perfect movie to end 2016 with. Here’s why:
1.
Treasure trove of familiar tunes
The film features more than 85 classic songs from famous artists, such as Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe”; Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off”, Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance”; and Bart Howard’s “Fly Me To The Moon”.
The whole family, young and old, will all be able to find a song or two which you are familiar with and move to the beat!
2.
There’s an original song too
Sing also features an original song by Stevie Wonder and Ariana Grande called “Faith”. Yes, two singing legends from different eras came together just for this:
3.
Singing animals
Come on! What’s there not to love about singing animals? From a soulful gorilla with a British accent (Taron Egerton) to a crested porcupine punk rocker (Scarlett Johansson) to a domestic pig who is a mother of 25 piglets (Reese Witherspoon), there are lots of lovable animal characters in the movie for one to feel emotionally attached to.
4.
It’s like watching a reality singing competition
Remember the days when the mother of all reality singing competition, American Idol, first aired in 2002? Those were the heydays when people will rush home just to catch which is the next contestant to get booted out and the reality drama that follows.
Watching Sing is like watching a full season of one of those reality singing competition, but back to the good old days when the format was still immensely popular.
Some may accuse the storyline of being too formulaic, but it is also unabashedly entertaining. It’s a tried and tested formula after all.
5.
There’s a happy ending
Like all good family movies for the year end festive period, there is a happy ending to Sing. You are expecting it and you get it.
Life’s hard. Why make it any harder by watching a sad movie to round up the year?
Sing is just the perfect last movie to watch for 2016 to end on a cheerful note. It is now showing in Singapore cinemas from 8 December. Go catch it! 🙂
