Teochew Festival 2016 – Download & Play the “Heng Heng” Mobile Game App and Win Attractive Prizes (worth over $8,000)!


Teochew Festival 2016 Media Conference

Returning after two years, Teochew Festival 2016 (潮州节2016) to be held at Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre, Level 1, Hall A, will be 1.5 times bigger than its inaugural event in 2014, occupying more than 45,000 square feet of exhibition space and featuring over 30 vendors. This year’s festival will be officially opened by Deputy Prime Minister & Coordinating Minister for National Security, Mr Teo Chee Hean, on 9 December 2016.

The festival offers visitors enlightening glimpses into the daily lives of Teochews. Organized by the Teochew Poit Ip Huay Kuan (潮州八邑会馆), they hope to focus on an important aspect of Singapore’s Chinese culture through the festival and aims to celebrate the rich culture and heritage of the Teochews in Singapore with the following highlights:

Qiao Pi Cultural Zone (侨批文化馆)

There will be a cultural zone featuring artefacts such as Teochew letters known as “Qiao Pi”, a unique form of correspondence used in the early days by Teochew migrants in Singapore to communicate with and to send back a portion of their income to their families in China. Teochew Poit Ip Huay Kuan has specially loaned these artefacts from the Museum of Overseas Chinese Remittance, Shantou, China (中国汕头侨批文物馆), to be displayed at the cultural zone.

Traditional Teochew Arts & Crafts

Visitors can admire the exquisite traditional Teochew crafts at the arts & crafts zone where there will be live demonstrations by master craftsmen. Crafts on display include lantern making, golden silk embroidery works, exquisite wood carvings and delicate ceramic tea sets.

A Taste of Teochew Cuisine

Food plays a crucial role in Teochew culture and heritage, foodies will be treated to an array of Teochew cuisine at the festival. There will be a food street featuring 20 vendors selling traditional Teochew dishes comprising of homegrown Teochew eateries such as Chui Huay Lim Teochew Cuisine and Chin Lee Restaurant as well as food vendors all the way from Shantou and Chaozhou, China. Be sure to be there to try the variety of tantalizing Teochew specialties such as Bak Kut Teh, Crystal Dumplings, Fried Kway Teow and Fried Oyster Omelette.

Teochew Cultural Performances

The Xiao Mei Hua Opera troupe (小梅花艺术团) will be performing Teochew operas and AFinger (一指团体) from Shantou, China will perform their renditions of traditional Teochew tunes with a modern twist of hip-hop and RAP music at the festival’s central stage. This will be interesting and entertaining to watch.

Teochew Tunes (潮音汇狮城)

As part of Teochew Festival 2016, renowned Shantou Chao Yue Tuan (汕头潮乐团) will be putting up a concert, Teochew Tunes (潮音汇狮城) – A performance of a string of Teochew Opera classics and tunes, together with local performing group, Nam Hwa Opera (南华儒剧场) at the Singapore Conference Hall on 16 & 17 December 2016 at 8pm. Tickets are priced at $10, $20 & $100 and will be sold at Chui Huay Lim Teochew Restaurant, Nam Hwa Opera and Singapore Poit Ip Huay Kuan from 7 November 2016 onwards. The 4th International Teochew Doctoral Forum (国际潮籍博士论坛)

The 4th International Teochew Doctoral Forum (ITDForum) will be officially opened at Teochew Festival 2016 on 9 December 2016 by Deputy Prime Minister & Coordinating Minister for National Security, Mr Teo Chee Hean, at Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre, Level 3, Seminar Room.

Organized by the International Teochew Doctors Association, the annual academic event provides a platform for professional experts to discuss and disseminate state-of-the-art research and technologies in a smart nation. The theme for this year’s forum is “Smart Future: Opportunities and Challenges”, which aims to promote collaborations among Teochew technologists and entrepreneurs in the area of smart applications and to foster closer ties between research, development and commercialization.

Timings: 9 December 2016, 1.30pm to 7pm | 10 December 2016, 9am to 12pm

“Heng Heng” Mobile Game App

The “Heng Heng” mobile game app is free and can be downloaded from Android Google Play or the Apple App Store.

Officially launched at the Teochew Festival 2016 Media Conference on 25 October 2016, the festival has developed its first mobile game app, “Heng Heng”, specially created with the aim of engaging, entertaining and educating players about the Teochew culture through traditional Teochew pastries or “kuehs”.

It is a simple mobile game of swiping to combine same Teochew kuehs together and catching the falling Teochew kuehs in the basket that the young and even the older folks will be able to play and find fun in. You can learn about the different types of Teochew kuehs and it even teaches you how to pronounce them in Teochew.

Download and start playing the “Heng Heng” mobile game app because prizes such as Teochew Festival 2016 entry tickets & vouchers (worth $100 each) and Lenovo Tab3 7 Essential Tablets (worth $149 each) will be given out to the Top 10 highest scoring players weekly from 25 October 2016 to 5 December 2016!

That’s not all, the Top 10 players with the best scores over the 6 weeks of the contest will be invited to the Teochew Festival 2016 where they will walk away with even more attractive prizes (worth over $8,000) that includes Teochew Festival 2016 vouchers, F&B vouchers, a GoPro Camera-HERO5 Black (worth $590), a Lenovo Yoga 900 Tablet (worth $1,999), a pair 3D2N Air Ticket & Hotel Stay to Shantou, China (worth $2,088) and the grand prize of a SK Jewellery Gold Plate Gift Set (worth $2,388) shown above!
