WICKED – The Musical @ MasterCard Theatres, Marina Bay Sands

WICKED – The Musical celebrates it’s 13th anniversary since it’s first show in Broadway in  2003 and has captivated 50 million theatregoers of all ages, worldwide. It is one of Broadway and the West End’s most celebrated, spectacular and successful musicals of all time.

Wicked is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and book by Winnie Holzman. It is based on the 1995 Gregory Maguire novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, an alternative telling of the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz and L. Frank Baum’s classic 1900 story, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

The musical is told from the perspective of the witches of the Land of Oz; its plot begins before and continues after Dorothy’s arrival in Oz from Kansas, and it includes several references to the 1939 film and Baum’s novel.

Wicked tells the story of two unlikely friends, Elphaba (the Wicked Witch of the West) and Galinda (whose name later changes to Glinda the Good Witch), who struggle through opposing personalities and viewpoints, rivalry over the same love-interest, reactions to the Wizard’s corrupt government and, ultimately, Elphaba’s public fall from grace.

Discover a colourful fantasy world of wizards, witches, sorcery and magic and experience an enchanting story of the two unlikely friends.

The musical is the winner of 100 international awards, including three Tony Awards on Broadway and two Olivier Awards in London’s West End.

For such a popular show, I only managed to catch it for the first time last Friday for the opening night performance at the MasterCard Theatres, Marina Bay Sands. My companion for the night was my 5-years-old son, Asher, who was also watching it for the first time.

After catching the trailer, Asher had been bugging me to bring him along to watch it as he was bewitched by the enchanting songs and the world of Oz.

It didn’t disappoint.

The two leads for this production put in an amazing performance each, with the perfect dose of wickedness and goodness respectively.

There are tales of friendship lost and found again; complicated love relationships; and of course, the constant tension between being wicked and good. What’s there not to love about this musical?

These were all not to easy to explain to a 5-years-old though. Nonetheless, the bright, colourful costumes, delightful slew of magical characters and elaborate stage designs kept Asher entertained throughout the show, without a dull moment.

Asher did not get the full depth of the story, but he understood it was a tale of the friendship between two unlikely union – someone ‘wicked’ and someone ‘good’, yet the wicked was good at times and the good was wicked at times. They were how they grew to be only because of each other.

This was the life lesson I took away that night.

For better or worse, the people around us are what made us what we are today. That’s life.
