SHREK THE MUSICAL is now showing at the MasterCard Theatres at Marina Bay Sands. I caught the opening night performance last Thursday with my son, Asher.

The musical is based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation film that started the whole Shrek entertainment franchise. Watch everyone’s favourite ogre take to the stage in this live adaptation.

Here are five reasons why you should bring your kid to watch this musical:

1.

It teaches good moral values

Like in the original film, the main underlying message in the story is not to judge a book by it’s cover. The ugly characters in fairy tales may not necessarily always be the bad guys. Ogres can be good and Prince Charming can be evil.

2.

Colourful costumes and props

The costumes and props for this production are amazing. How do you bring something as fantastical as Far Far Away Land onto a stage adaptation? They managed to do it for this musical and everything looks just right. Your kid will be wowed by all the colourful and garish costumes and props throughout the musical.

3.

Lots of fairy tale characters

For a stage production, Shrek The Musical managed to squeeze in lots of fairy tale characters to give you the best value for your tickets. I counted the Three Little Pigs, Pinocchio, Gingerbread Man, Three Blind Mice, among many others. These are on top of the main cast of the ogres, Shrek and Fiona, Donkey, Dragon and the villain, Lord Farquaad.

4.

Shrek-themed snacks

You can buy some Shrek-themed snacks for your kid during the intermission. I bought Asher a gingerbread man which cost S$4. There are some other items like green apple freeze as well.

5.

Uniquely Singapore Shrek

The cast in the musical made many references to Singapore and some of our landmarks, food and icons. I won’t be going into details to avoid spoilers. These references would be fun for you and your kid to spot while watching the musical.

The cast is very fun offstage as well. Check out this video interview with them by migme:
