Celebrate Mother’s Day with The Fullerton Hotel: Porcelain Painting Workshops

This post is written by Emily Koh from our sister site, Asia 361

After 22 years of celebrating Mother’s Day, my mother must have probably gotten sick of the countless of flowers, cards, chocolates that my sister and I have gotten for her. Well, this Mother’s Day, I wanted my gift to be something special – something that could not be found on those commonplace shelves at the stores.

If you share that same mentality as me, I’ll let you in on my Mother’s Day present this year – a beautifully painted porcelain plate. After all, I figured that the idea of me expending hours painting something specially for my mother would have been priceless in her eyes, in contrast to that thousand dollar Gucci bag out there.

From now till 29 May 2016, artists from the “Poetic Strokes” art exhibition will be conducting highly therapeutic painting workshops on some basic painting techniques on porcelain plates every weekend. If your mum loves such activities, this would definitely be a great way to bond with her. What’s more, both of you can do something meaningful together, especially since 40 percent of the proceeds raised from workshop tickets will be donated to the Breast Cancer Foundation.

Before the workshop commences, you will be required to choose from two designs – either the cute looking bear or a beautifully designed rose. As my mother was a huge fan of roses, my choice of design was an extremely easy decision.

While I was not artistic nor had any artistic tendencies as everyone else, the workshop organisers were extremely patient and would explain the painting techniques in extreme detail. Throughout the entire workshop, they would frequent the tables, checking on our progress and even gave tips along the way to ensure that our painting reached the ideal state of perfection.

Finally, after a gruelling two hours (it was harder than I had imagined), my masterpiece was done. With the help of the artists from “Poetic Strokes”, my painting had come to life. They simply knew how to apply the right strokes to create the shadows at the right angles, which allowed my porcelain painting to stand out on its own.

Overall, this was a Saturday well spent for me and I would highly recommend this workshop. Not only do you have the perfect gift for your mother, you also get to learn a new skill and possibly make some new friends there! The “Poetic Stroke” artists are extremely friendly, and were even more than happy to share with us their life stories and journeys thus far.

If you are interested in this or would even like to take your mum here to hone her artistic skills, book your tickets now at http://fullertonporcelainworkshop.peatix.com. The workshops are priced at S$78 nett for adults and S$38 nett for children aged between 6 and 11 years old. What’s more, these prices are inclusive of a slice of cake and coffee/tea/juice, for you to enjoy at the Courtyard – the perfect way for one to end the day indeed.
