There’s always an excuse for hitting our family’s favourite pizza joint: I didn’t have time to cook, Asher likes pizza and the ingredients used at Extra Virgin are always fresh. Admittedly, I have had one more reason to visit Extra Virgin: It’s one of the merchants in The Entertainer app!
The Entertainer app is the most useful dining-out app I know, offering 1-for-1 deals at more than 770 establishments here. The annual app ($95) is valid for 12 calendar months from January to December, and the monthly app ($19) is valid for 30 days upon activation.
It works like this: Order two main courses and get the less expensive one for free. At Extra Virgin Pizza, order one regular pizza and get the less expensive one or a same-priced one for free. Just let the server know that you are using The Entertainer voucher when footing the bill. We have had no issues with using the app at all.
Extra Virgin Pizza is my favourite pizza in the neighbourhood because of their thin, crispy-chewy crust. It’s chao-dar (Hokkien for “burnt”)at the leopard spots, where the heat from the 500°C woodstone oven has charred the dough, and stretchy towards the centre. According to the press release, this is because of the ageing process of the dough. Caputo double-zero pizza flour from Naples, Italy, is mixed with sea salt and water and then set aside to age for three days in a temperature-controlled environment. The aging lets gluten bonds form, which is responsible for the silky texture of the pizza base.
Asher enjoys looking at the pizza chefs stretch the dough. Instead of tossing, which damages the gluten bonds which have formed over the three-day ageing process, the chefs use a Neapolitan “slap” technique before sliding the pizzas into the woodstone oven.
I love that the topping combinations are unique. Our family favourite is the Pistachio Pesto, which is made with a pistachio pesto base, topped with baby arugula and finished with lemon vinaigrette. The finished product tastes nutty, with a slightly tart edge and the herbal, peppery crunch from the baby arugula.
We also like the Spotted Pig ($28), which has spicy pepperoni, pork sausage and applewood smoked bacon on top. If you like pepperoni, this is definitely the better version, with the combination of savoury, piquant and smoky flavours from the preserved meats.
Asher likes the Ham and Mushroom ($24) pizza best. His favourite food is mushroom and he likes ham. This is available on the kid’s menu. One kid’s meal costs $12 and you can choose between pizza or pasta as a main menu item. If you go with the pizza (7-inch), you also get freshly squeezed orange juice or milk and a small scoop of chocolate or vanilla ice-cream as dessert. I love that the kids are not given the choice of commercial sodas or other sugared drinks. This is in line with the Extra Virgin belief that all ingredients should be pure and all-natural, with no preservatives or additives.
Now, because it would be a pity if more people didn’t use The Entertainer voucher, Alvinology is giving away 10 2014 ANNUAL Entertainer Singapore apps (each worth $95)! To win, simply leave a comment at the end of this post about why you want the app. Please indicate a working e-mail address we can contact you at.
We shall be contacting you as soon as we have details on how you can download and activate the app for free. Please don’t be disappointed if you didn’t win this round.
