Get ready for another tick off your food-exploration checklist. If you haven’t heard so, Penang Hawkers’ Fare at York Hotel is back! Since 1986, York Hotel has been serving up authentic Penang street food to tantalise the tastebuds of both locals and expats alike. Buffet style, eat all you can! Here’s summing up some of the best dishes that you die-die must try! So don’t say I bojio

Nasi Lemak with a twist

Unless you have been living in a cave all these while, you must have tried Nasi Lemak around in Singapore or Malaysia. Then again, you probably haven’t tried this. Nasi Lemak served with Chicken Kapitan is new on the York menu and it is ready to sizzle on your tastebuds. What’s Kapitan, you may ask? Just think of it as buffalo wings with a good amount of spice. Recommended for those who love spicy food.

I was never a spicy food lover but I could savour this with ease. So don’t worry!

Char Kway Teow, anyone?

Yet another famous local delicacy that can be found in practically any hawker centre or kopitiam here is the char kway teow. They are kind on the dark soy sauce on this one so this is not as ‘black’ as the usual flavour. Still, this is good to digest if you are not all out for sauce-in-your-plate!

Lor Bak, anyone?

The Lor Bak is easily one of my favourites. The usual suspects are in – dried beancurd, fishcake, cucumber, ngoh hiang, etc. It is definitely less greasy than a lot of others I have tried, so you don’t have to worry about blotting out the oil here.

I hope you are feeling hungry already, as I definitely am! Not an easy task to write about food (without salivating) when looking at these glorious pictures ain’t it? The next dish, most commonly referred to as the Or Luak, did not disappoint. Again, one thing I noted was that the dishes were not overly salty. So go ahead and feast!

Penang Laksa tastes light yet flavourful

I would like to give a special mention to this – the Penang Laksa. I have to admit I was never a laksa person. I always find laksa too heavy on the palette, with all the generous portions of coconut milk and what not. You tend to feel bloated after eating a bowl. This, however, changed my perception of how laksa could taste. It tastes LIGHT. Yes, light, but still sour and spicy at the same time. I tasted some hints of asam in here, which I loved! I would also call it a remote cousin of the tom yum goong. Why not you try and tell me?

The Penang Chendol needs no introduction. Being a traditional dessert popular in Southeast Asia, it is one of the dessert choices you can find at the Penang Hawkers’ fare. Red beans, jelly noodles made from rice flour with added green colouring are the staple ingredients of the chendol. So for those with a special intestinal compartment for desserts (if you do after the buffet), the chendol is your best bet to rounding the meal off.
